Why APPI:

When Grande Cheese Co in Lomira, WI needed a solution for lifting cheese wheels from their salt brine tanks, they turned to Creative Design & Engineering, LLC. Dan Lindgren, the company’s president, contacted Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) to engineer a replacement for their existing chain hoist, which was suffering from severe rusting due to the corrosive environment.

The challenge was twofold:

The salt brine tank created corrosive vapors.

The production room underwent nightly fogging with a peroxyacetic sanitizer.

These conditions were causing rapid deterioration of the chain hoist, compromising safety and efficiency in lifting cheese wheel baskets weighing between 300 and 700 pounds.

APPI’s solution was the Columbia HC1500-1A25-L-15 AC Electric Strap Hoist, specifically designed to withstand harsh, corrosive environments.

Key features of this solution include:

A durable strap instead of a chain, resistant to corrosion and validated through on-site testing.

A corrosion-resistant finish to protect the hoist’s components.

A NEMA 6 rated hand-held pendant control, ensuring safe operation in wet conditions.

A washdown-duty rated motor for longevity in the sanitized environment.

By implementing APPI’s strap hoist solution, Grande Cheese Co has significantly improved their cheese wheel lifting process. The new hoist offers enhanced safety, increased efficiency, and reduced maintenance needs, even in the challenging conditions of their production facility.

Sorry, but we just have to say, this is as gouda as it gets for this type of application.

For more information about this strap hoist solution for food processing environments or any of APPI’s other specialized products and services, please contact Allied Power Products, Inc. With over 30 years of experience in providing winches, hoists, capstans, and cranes tailored to specific application requirements, APPI continues to be a trusted partner in the food processing industry.

Multiple bases

Quick-disconnect pendant with E-Stop

Why APPI:

Graeme Cooper, the Service Manager at ZPMC USA, had previously worked with Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) and turned to them when faced with a new challenge. ZPMC USA needed a solution to lift loads up to 2,000 lbs over a distance of 200 feet from ships to shore.

To meet these requirements, APPI provided a Columbia 20AAM Davit paired with a Columbia HF4700-4A17-L-00 AC electric hoist. The davit crane and hoist combination offered a reliable and efficient system for ship-to-shore lifting operations.

Mobility was a key concern for ZPMC USA, as they needed to move the davit crane between different locations. APPI addressed this by supplying multiple bases for the davits, allowing the unit to be easily relocated as needed. This flexibility enhanced the system’s versatility and adaptability to various lifting scenarios.

The custom drum on the HF4700 hoist ensured that the 250 feet of ¼” diameter wire rope could be safely and efficiently managed. The quick-disconnect pendant with an E-Stop feature provided operators with convenient and secure control over the lifting process.

By implementing APPI’s ship-to-shore davit crane solution, ZPMC USA not only achieved their lifting goals but also saved valuable time in their operations. The Columbia 20AAM Davit and HF4700 hoist showcased APPI’s ability to deliver customized, high-performance lifting solutions tailored to the unique needs of the shipping industry.

Why APPI: Known for high quality oysters since the 1940’s, Copps Island Oysters wanted an AC electric wire rope oyster hoist to replace the manual chain hoists they were using to transport oyster bins.

As they are a high volume producer, the hoist needed to be capable of heavy daily use. One of our Columbia HC 1500 AC hoists was selected along with one of our 1-ton manual trollies for the application.

Its cast and machined construction along with minimal maintenance requirements appeal to Pogy Pogany, the maintenance manager at their production facility.

As it turned out he was so pleased with the unit he purchased a second one less than six months later.

Application: Lifting a hatch door on an elevator shaft
Customer: Dairy Farmers of America (DFA)
Location: Garden City, KS
Hoist model: Columbia HC2000-1A25-L-01 AC Electric Hoist
Performance:
Line Pull: 2,000 pounds on the first layer
Line Speed: 8.5 feet per minute on the first layer
Special Features: Aluminum base plate and Tension plate
Power Source: 115 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz

Why APPI: Chris Castoe, the maintenance manager for the DFA powdered milk processing facility in Garden City, had a problem when he contacted us. To wit, he kept buying AC hoists from a large industrial supplier and they kept failing after very limited use.

The application was straight forward: Lift a 15 foot square by ¼” thick, hinged hatch door that covered a 150’ tall powdered milk elevator in a drying tower. Prior to using the hoists that kept failing he had tried a chain hoist but it was not a good match for the task.

When Chris contacted us we shared information with him about how our regenerative drive hoists monitor current draw and prevent the motor from stalling and burning out when the operator fails to let the hoist stop properly.

We provided his Columbia HC2000 AC electric hoists with base plates to simplify mounting and tension plates to help prevent bird nesting when the hatch doors are pinned open without any load on the wire rope.

To help minimize shipping time Chris had their primary industrial parts supplier, Lawson Products, Inc., handle the purchase of the three units for DFA.

Please contact us if you would like more information about these regenerative drive hoists or any of our other products and services.

Application: Material handling hoist for manufacturing of wind turbines
Location: Wisconsin
Hoist model: Columbia HC1500-1A25-L-15
Line speed: 11 feet per minute on the first layer
Strap Capacity: 27.5 feet x 2” wide x .5″ thick strap with straight latching hook
Power source: 115 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz
Special features: Strap drum conversion

Why APPI: The challenge of handling large component assemblies in any manufacturing process is never ending. It is magnified when minimal head room is available and the product being assembled is a wind turbine.

That was the case when a major wind turbine manufacturer needed a material handling hoist in their assembly area and the beam mounted hoists they looked at all hung too low to be usable in their application. When they consulted with us, we suggested one of our Columbia HC1500 AC electric hoists with a strap for lifting that would be mounted to the side of the pick point. To maximize the headroom we provided a change of direction roller that was installed on their lifting beam.

This arrangement was ideal for them as it provided approximately 24” of additional head room compared to a typical beam mounted hoist. To allow precise load positioning, the handheld pendant controller was provided with a potentiometer to control the speed of the hoist.

Please contact us if you would like more information about this particular type of material handling hoist or any of our other products and services.

Why APPI: Attracting a colony of purple martins, the largest North American swallow, to share your home is no small task. So when Gordy’s Machine & Tool in Fairfield, IL, was contracted to build a series of martin bird colonies, they contacted Allied Power Products, Inc. for assistance with their hoist system.

With the average martin house sitting upwards of 20 feet in the air, the Columbia HC1500-1A25-L-11 AC Electric Hoist raises and lowers the house on its mast for service throughout the year. The hoist is powered by a 3/4 horsepower washdown-duty-rated motor equipped for outdoor use. The hoist is treated with an epoxy overcoat and stainless steel fasteners to ensure protection from the elements and corrosion from moisture.

The maintenance hoist uses a NEMA 4X rated handheld pendant with UP/DOWN momentary contacts. The pendant and lead can be disconnected from the enclosure and stored when not in use for safety and security. When power is not available, the houses can be raised and lowered by a manual override crank incorporated into the hoist’s gear end. An aluminum base plate was included for ease of installation, and a cable tension plate is equipped to help prevent bird-nesting (of the wire rope).
