Why APPI:

The Hershey Company needed a reliable food grade hoist solution for transporting materials along their chocolate manufacturing line. After conducting a thorough web search, Tom Smullen, Technical Assurance Manager at Hershey, approached Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) to help identify the optimal equipment for their specific requirements.

Through collaborative discussions, The Hershey Company and APPI analyzed the application needs. The food grade hoist system would need to lift loads of approximately 1,000 pounds to a height of 10 feet before moving materials 20 feet down the production line to the next position where they would be lowered. Food-grade compatibility was essential for maintaining the highest standards in chocolate manufacturing.

Based on these requirements, both parties determined that a Columbia HD1300 AC electric strap hoist paired with a 1-ton capacity Columbia manual trolley would be the ideal solution. The food grade hoist features include:

Strap conversion for stable vertical lifting and lowering

Clean operation suitable for chocolate manufacturing environments

Easy-to-handle system compared to wire rope or chain alternatives

Precise control for material movement along the production line

Food-safe design meeting industry standards

Tom specifically chose the strap version of the food grade hoist as it provides cleaner handling than traditional options—a crucial consideration in food manufacturing environments where hygiene and product safety are paramount.

While the loads may vary depending on the specific product being manufactured, they are always sure to be part of something “sweet” in the end!

For more information about this food grade hoist and trolley system or any of APPI’s other specialized products and services, please contact Allied Power Products, Inc. With over 40 years of experience in providing winches, hoists, capstans, and cranes tailored to specific application requirements, APPI continues to be a trusted partner in the food manufacturing industry.

Why APPI:

Manufacturing and production downtime can quickly erode a company’s bottom line. Johnson Timber Corporation faced repeated downtime events due to crooked logs getting jammed in their wood chipper. Initially, they used a manual block-and-tackle arrangement to clear the jams, which was time-consuming, difficult, and dangerous for their employees.

Seeking a better solution, Jim Walcisak, Johnson Timber’s VP of Manufacturing, contacted Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI). After a thorough review of their application requirements, APPI recommended the Columbia HD2000-1A34-L-01 AC Electric Hoist, specifically designed to handle the demanding task of clearing log jams.

The Columbia HD2000 log hoist features a line pull of 2,000 pounds on the first layer and a line speed of 8 feet per minute, providing ample power and speed to efficiently remove jammed logs. The hoist is equipped with a wire rope tension plate to ensure proper rope spooling and Quick Mount Brackets for easy installation and relocation.

Since implementing the Columbia hoist, Johnson Timber has seen a significant improvement in its operations. Jim Walcisak noted that the jams are now cleared in a tenth of the time compared to the old method, stating that their Columbia hoist “…was great for both saving time and making work safer.”

By partnering with APPI and integrating the Columbia HD2000 log hoist into their process, Johnson Timber has not only reduced downtime and increased productivity but also created a safer working environment for their employees.

Why APPI:

Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) delivers custom lifting solutions for critical infrastructure applications, such as water flow monitoring at dams. Manitoba Hydro sought to replace its aging water flow testing system, which lowers a frame equipped with propellers into the dam to measure water speed and flow.

Monitoring water flow at a dam is crucial for controlling water quality and levels. Manitoba Hydro accomplishes this by lowering a long, thin frame fitted with fan blade-type propellers into a slot at the top of the dam. The speed at which the blades turn is recorded to measure the water flow. This frame structure is lowered into place from a portable gantry equipped with two APPI hoists.

Paul Halipchuk, the Mechanical Engineering Section Head for Manitoba Hydro, was tasked with replacing the old system. He wanted to ensure that the new system had a simple, mechanical means of preventing a catastrophic overload on the lifting gantry. APPI collaborated closely with Halipchuk to design a spring-equipped, vertical lead sheave with overload detection, eliminating the need for an electronic load-sensing system.

After finalizing the design, Wallin Industries won the bid and purchased seven Columbia HD1450-1A34-L-02 gantry hoists with custom lead sheaves – six for installation and one spare. These hoists feature single-speed controls in a NEMA 4 painted steel enclosure, a NEMA 4X hand-held pendant controller, and the custom-designed VLS-6 vertical lead sheave with overload detection.

APPI’s Columbia gantry hoists and custom lead sheaves enhance the safety and reliability of Manitoba Hydro’s water flow testing process. By providing tailored lifting solutions for critical infrastructure applications, APPI continues to support the efficient management of water resources.

Application: Lifting and Lowering Corn Dryer Access Doors
Customer:Schelkopf Engineering Inc.
Location: Geneva, NE
Hoist Model: Columbia AC Electric HD2000-1A34-F-01
Performance:

Line Pull: 2,000 pounds on the first layer, effectively doubling with a two-part line

Line Speed: 12 feet per minute, reduced to 6 feet per minute with a two-part line

Wire Rope: 40ft. of 5/16″ diameter

Power Source: 115 VAC 1Ø 60 Hertz

Why APPI:

Schelkopf Engineering Inc. designed a unit for a custom seed corn dryer located in Geneva, NE. The reverse flow dryer now uses Columbia Door Hoists. The precision hoists improve reliability. Before, manual counterweights operated the doors. Now, the HD2000-1A34-F-01 model automates them. As a result, safety and efficiency increased in reducing seed corn moisture.

This seed corn drying facility, approximately 100′ x 300′ in size, relies on the Columbia hoist to lift and lower the hinged access doors, which weigh around 800 pounds each. With a line pull of 2,000 pounds on the first layer and 4,000 pounds at the hook with a two-part line, the hoist easily handles the door weight. The 6 feet per minute line speed on the first layer allows the doors to open and close smoothly and efficiently.

The hoist’s NEMA-12 rated full-voltage handheld pendant gives operators precise door control. The spring-applied electrically released brakemotor supports the doors securely in the open position while workers access the dryer interior. This adaptation reflects Allied Power Products’ commitment to delivering tailored, robust solutions for the agricultural sector.

Automating a previously manual process, the Columbia Door Hoist improves safety and streamlines workflows in this critical seed corn drying operation. As demand grows for enhanced quality control in agriculture, innovations like the Columbia AC Electric HD2000 unit will become increasingly valuable for custom facilities.

For more details on our door hoist solutions or to explore our range of products and services, please contact Allied Power Products, Inc. Our team is dedicated to providing tailored solutions to meet your specific industrial needs.

Wire Rope Capacity: 99 feet x 3/16″ diameter wire rope with latching hook

Why APPI: When Supreme Integrated Technologies was contracted to build a barge-mounted work platform, mechanical engineer Carson Vaccarella turned to Allied Power Products for help with specifying the hoist needed to deploy a folding section of the unit. Based on the project specifications, it was determined that a Columbia HD1300 was the most practical solution to their needs.

When the platform is deployed, the operator swings out a jib arm with the hoist mounted on it, hooks the load line to the folding section of the platform and lifts it from its stowed position. The boom is then swung past the center of the hinge on the platform and the platform extension is lowered to expand its working area. To stow the folding section, the process is reversed and the jib and hoist are secured until needed again.

Using one of our Columbia AC electric hoists mounted on the jib makes this multi-axis lift, tip and lower process very simple.

Application: Core sampling marine hoist
Customer: Michigan Department of Environmental Quality
Location: Lansing, MI
Special Features: Washdown-duty motor, stainless steel fasteners (where applicable), epoxy overcoat
Why APPI: The Remediation Division of the Michigan DEQ is responsible for the ongoing testing of sediment in all the navigable waters located within the state. To do so, they needed a hoist that could work at depths up to 100 feet with line pull adequate to overcome suction when pulling a sediment sampling barrel loose from the bottom. Given the limited power available on their dredge, it was a pleasant surprise for Daniel Peabody, a geologist with the department, to find our HD2000 AC hoist with minimal modification would be an ideal solution for their application.

With a fully sealed planetary gear set and a wash down duty motor with an automatic brake, this hoist was easily configured to perform in a harsh, outdoor, marine working environment.
