Application: Pump hoist maintenance system
Customer: Lafollette Mining Supply Co
Location: Jacksboro, TN
Hoist Model: Columbia HL12000-4A17-L-02 AC Electric Hoists
Trolley Model: Motorized 15-ton Hammerhead Trolley
Performance based on 460 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz:

Line Pull: Maximum of 24,000 lbs. at the hook on each hammerhead. Maximum system lift limited to 30,000 lbs. by user.

Line Speed: 6 feet per minute on the first layer

Wire Rope Capacity: 300 ft. X 1/2″ diameter stainless steel rope

Special Features: Motorized hammerhead trolleys. Synchronized controls for entire system.

WHY APPI:

Local PUD engineers rejected a hoist design for lifting 15,000-pound pumps. As a result, Billy Ball, the Sales Manager for Lafollette Mining Supply, began searching for a reliable solution provider. He told us he chose APPI because of our strong customer reviews and our wide range of successful applications.

Lafollette Mining Supply clearly outlined their needs. First, they wanted a barge-mounted hoist system to lift heavy pumps from depths up to 125 feet. Additionally, the system needed to work in a marine setting. Furthermore, it had to fit within their existing crane frame’s limited headroom. Finally, the design needed to move pumps fore and aft during maintenance.

After detailed discussions, Lafollette Mining Supply and APPI together crafted an effective solution. We agreed on a system using two Columbia HL12000 Hoists paired with two motorized 15-ton hammerhead trolleys. This setup delivers up to 30,000 pounds of line pull to free pumps from depth. Moreover, it keeps pumps at a steady height while the trolley moves across the deck.

This jointly developed pump hoist system offers several key benefits:

The high-efficiency planetary reductions create a compact design

The 5 HP TEFC UL-listed brake motors ensure reliable operation

Synchronized controls allow for precise handling of heavy pumps

Billy happily reported that PUD engineers quickly approved our solution. Subsequently, the team has been impressed with the system’s performance in daily operations.

Why APPI:

International Marine Flotation Systems (IMFS) approached Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) with a unique challenge: to design a lift system for seaplane maintenance that could operate efficiently in both air and water environments. The result was an innovative floating platform that transforms from a square to an “H” shape, with two 32-foot by 20-foot ramps that submerge to lift seaplanes weighing up to 10,000 pounds.

APPI’s solution centered around the Columbia HL9000-2A17-L-02 AC electric hoist, specifically engineered for this marine application.

Key features of this float plane lift system include:

Dual Columbia HL9000 hoists per ramp, providing a combined lifting capacity of 18,000 pounds.

Water-tight boxes housing the hoists below deck level, ensuring safety and longevity of the equipment.

5/8″ wire ropes designed for marine environments, kept clear of personnel, equipment, and aircraft.

CSA-rated 3 HP brake motors for reliable performance in demanding conditions.

CUL-listed control enclosure with both local and radio remote control options.

Selector switch allowing for individual or simultaneous operation of each hoist pair.

This custom-designed system offers IMFS and their clients several benefits:

Efficient maintenance procedures for seaplanes

Easy dewatering of floats

Safe and controlled loading and unloading of aircraft

Versatility in handling various seaplane models up to 10,000 pounds

By implementing APPI’s Columbia float plane lift system, IMFS has significantly improved their seaplane maintenance capabilities. The system’s innovative design and robust construction ensure safe, efficient operations in the challenging marine environment.

Why APPI:

The Marine Renewable Energy Collaborative (MRECNE) required a reliable hoisting solution for lowering and lifting a 100kW tidal energy turbine 13 feet from deck level to its submerged working position. The situation is complicated by both limited electrical power on the site and the corrosive marine atmosphere, which makes maintenance and adjustments difficult. Operating in a challenging marine environment with limited onsite power, they turned to Allied Power Products (APPI) and our robust Columbia hoists.

The Columbia HL12000-2A17 hoist tackles the demanding task of raising and lowering the heavy tidal turbine with ease, thanks to its robust 12,000 pound pull capacity. Specifically designed for this application, the hoist’s custom single-phase 230VAC motor ensures smooth operation even when relying on a limited on-site electrical supply. And with specialized features like a marine-grade epoxy coat and stainless steel construction built to withstand salty, corrosive air, the HL12000 reliably withstands the harsh coastal environment. Since install, MRECNE’s personnel have been continually impressed by the flawless performance and outstanding reliability of the Columbia hoist in tackling their critical lifting needs.

MRECNE appreciated our extensive experience engineering hoists and cranes for demanding environments. APPI eagerly anticipates supplying additional hoisting solutions optimized for their specialized needs as they continue advancing renewable energy testing.

Application: Columbia turbine hoist used to raise and lower submerged turbine for maintenance and adjustments
Customer: Marine Renewable Energy Collaborative – New England
Location: Marion, MA
Hoist Model: Columbia HL12000-2A17-L-02 AC Electric Hoist
Line Pull: 12,000 pounds on the first layer
Line Speed: 5 feet per minute on the first layer
Wire Rope Capacity: 55 feet x 1/2″ stainless steel wire rope with thimble eye
Power Source: 230 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz

Why APPI: In the case of a turbine powered by ocean tides and currents, it’s a case of what goes down must come up. For the Marine Renewable Energy Collaborative – New Enland (MRECNE) lowering and lifting their 100 kilowatt turbine 13 feet from deck level to its submerged working position was complicated by both limited electrical power on the site and the corrosive marine atmosphere in which it was situated.

To meet their application requirements, we provided one of our Columbia HL12000 AC electric turbine hoists that was prepped for the location with appropriate paint and fasteners. Since being installed it has performed flawlessly and MRECNE plans to incorporate this hoist in their future energy producing sites.

Please contact us if you would like more information about this turbine hoist or any of our other products and services.

Application: Columbia Demolition Hoist and Spooler
Customer: Mac and Mac Hydrodemolition, Inc.
Location: Langley, BC, Canada
Hoist Model: Columbia HL15000-2A17-X-04 with AutoAdvance Line Spooler
Load Rating: 15,000 pounds on the first layer
Line Speed: 11 feet per minute
Wire Rope Capacity: 756 feet x 9/16″ wire rope
Power Source: 230 VAC / 3 Phase / 60 Hz
Special Features: 5.0 HP brakemotor

Why APPI: Since 1973, Mac and Mac have been developing new ways to use high pressure water in extreme industrial applications. A measure of their success are the patents they hold for the most sophisticated hydrodemolition systems in North America.

Positioning their systems with wire rope hoists is typical for them but on many applications such as bridges, tunnels, large concrete shafts, hydroelectric dams and nuclear facilities, the reduced line capacity and spooling issues caused by fleet angle problems were hampering their ability to utilize their robots.

After reviewing their needs we provided them with one of our Columbia HL15000 AC hoists equipped with an AutoAdvance line spooler that mitigates all the issues they had with proper line spooling. Time previously lost to correcting those problems has been eliminated as has the need for their personnel to try to adjust the wire rope spooling by hand.

Application: Rooftop High Lift Hoist System
Customer: Crystal Services
Location: Indus, Alberta, Canada
Hoist Model: Columbia HL7000-4A17-L-04
Load rating: 7,400 pounds on the first layer
Line Speed: 21 feet per minute on the first layer
Wire Rope Capacity: 957 feet X ½” diameter wire rope
Power source: 460 VAC / Three Phase / 60 Hz
Special features: NEMA 4X control enclosure with variable frequency drive, NEMA 4X 15’ hand held pendant controls with speed potentiometer and UP/DOWN momentary buttons, AutoAdvance Line Spooler with inverted orientation for ceiling mount, nylatron sheaves for ½” wire rope, large cable capacity drum for 670’ of ½” wire rope.

Why APPI: Tower cranes provide an efficient material handling solution for high-lift applications on long duration projects such as new construction and major renovation projects. The high cost associated with renting and setting up a tower crane, or a mobile crane when building heights would allow their use, makes them prohibitively expensive for smaller projects.

Crystal Services, a leading industrial rigging company in Alberta, Canada, turned to APPI while researching for an alternative to the high cost of using a tower crane for high-lift applications. They required a high lift hoist system that could be transported to the top of a building freight elevators that would not sacrifice capacity or speed to ensure their projects came in on time and budget.

Working closely with Crystal Services Operations Manager, Cam Moody, it was determined one of our Columbia HL7000-4A17-L-04 AC electric hoists would meet their performance requirements. By adding one of our proprietary AutoAdvance Line Spoolers – installed in an inverted position – proper line spooling, even with minimal fleet angle, was ensured.

Cam indicated that this high lift hoist system has worked so well as an alternative to using a tower crane they are expanding their business and will be adding additional systems in the near future.

Why APPI: If you are not familiar with the James Webb Space Telescope project we would encourage you take a look at this link before reading any further https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/webb/main/index.html.

As you can see, the work is complex, technical, extremely sensitive – and extremely expensive. After a rigorous vetting process we were very pleased when three of our Columbia HL15000 hoists with variable frequency drives to control the line speed were specified to suspend the telescope while it is being tested inside NASA’s simulation chamber.

With our AutoAdvance Line Spoolers to ensure proper wire rope spooling and the ability to operate the hoists at extremely slow speeds our hoists were the perfect match for this once in a life time application.

Please contact us if you would like more information about these particular variable speed hoists or any of our other products and services.

Why APPI: It’s not common to find a private party that owns a full-size mockup of a US Navy, Blue Angels, Douglas A4 Skyhawk, let alone one who would like to have it hung from the ceiling of the party room in their house. But when a family came to Higdon Construction with this request, their experience with industrial jobs made them an ideal choice for this work.

Using three of our Columbia AC electric hoists with coordinated controls, the 9,000 lb. craft is lowered some 25 feet for regular cleanings and then lifted back into place. The hoists can also be operated independently which allows for the attitude of the fighter to be adjusted. When power is off to the hoist motors, a ratchet and pawl assembly is engaged to mechanically lock the drums in place.

David Nelson, Higdon’s lead electrician, worked closely with us to ensure the aircraft hoist system received adequate power and also acted as the liaison with the owner to convey the importance of ensuring proper installation, operation and maintenance of the hoists. Hidgon crafted a custom control panel to house the controls and indicator lights that blends into the décor of the house.
