Why APPI:

During the bustling cruise season in New York, World Yacht’s crew faces the repetitive and exhausting task of lifting and lowering the gangway before departure and after docking. Why APPI:

Colonial Pipeline’s infrastructure forms a critical backbone for fuel transportation across the Eastern U.S. To maintain safety and integrity, the company relies on pipeline inspection gauges (PIGs) to analyze pipe condition. These PIGs are launched and received through specialized access points known as pig traps.

Constructing a new trap, Colonial project manager Rhyan Sparkman sought a hazardous location rated winch to reliably open and close the 30-foot long, 12,000 pound trap door. He contacted Allied Power Products to find a robust custom solution suited to this demanding role.

Our team took a consultative approach, assessing trap design details and hazardous environment realities. After consideration, we recommended outfitting our 15,000 lb capacity Columbia WN Series winch to achieve intrinsically safe Division 1 operation.

The winch was equipped with spark resistant stainless steel wiring to limit ignition risks from rope wear. Class I Division 1 enclosures ensure electrical components are fully sealed for safe, reliable function. We also integrated a current sensing relay to prevent potential overtravel accidents when closing the massive door.

Columbia Positioning Winches Move Pressure Treated Lumber

Why APPI: When a tired, old winch they had been using to position rail cars of lumber in their pressure treating retort failed for the last time, Jim Burton, the plant manager for Southeast Wood Treating, Ltd. (SEWT) came to us looking for a replacement.

His application required two winches, one at each end of a 250 foot long track with a 70 foot long pressure treating chamber in the center of it. There are two 65 foot long cars on the track that are hooked together so that when one is pulled out one end of the retort the other is pulled in from the opposite side.

Chosen for this job were two of our WN8500 winches with 10 hp motors to provide his required line speed. Unlike the previous units, our Columbia winches were provided without brakes so they could be back driven when line is being pulled off them by the winch at the other end of the track. This arrangement saves valuable time and more importantly, ends the need for a person to walk down the tracks while pulling the wire off the winch drum each time the cars were being moved.

Why APPI: When the Idaho Fish and Game was designing a new fish weir structure for the LEMHI River fish trap, they needed a rugged compact winch to allow cable height adjustments to the weir as well as tensioning the cable when needed during the capture of ES listed salmon species. Recovery of the salmon during spawning is critical to ensure that future generations of salmon are preserved through their eggs. Allied Power Products, Inc. was able to provide components that exceeded their requirements while meeting their short lead time needs for the fish capture system.

Why APPI: This Dual Winch Positioning System uses two Columbia WN20000-4A17-L-01 AC Electric Winches to open and close a flood gate in southern Louisiana. The operator interfaces with a NEMA 4X stainless steel control enclosure; the panel houses two reversing starters that power the winch gear motors.

Installed on the enclosure’s panel face are OPEN & CLOSE buttons, a power indicator light, a fused manual disconnect, and an emergency stop button. The power switch and winch select switches are both keyed for added security. Gate over travel is prevented by roller lever limit switches wired directly to the control enclosure.

A 3-part epoxy and polyurethane paint treatment on the winches will ensure long-term performance in the marine environment.

APPI worked closely with the project engineering team to create a reliable system while also being simple to operate.
