Why APPI:

Stringing and tensioning conveyor belts in mining environments create a challenge that requires specialized equipment. Shaw-Almex, a leading supplier of conveyor belt vulcanizing and splicing equipment, recognized the need for a reliable solution to address these challenges. They turned to Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) for a custom-engineered winch system designed specifically for conveyor belt tensioning in harsh mining conditions.

APPI provided Shaw-Almex with eight Columbia WD1450 units, each tailored to meet the demanding requirements of mining operations. These winches feature:

Variable frequency drives housed in NEMA 4X rated control enclosures, ensuring protection against dust and water in challenging mining environments.

APPI’s innovative Columbia AutoAdvance Line Spooler, which guarantees perfect spooling regardless of pulling angle – a crucial feature for the complex layouts often found in mines.

Tensioning plates that prevent wire rope nesting when tension is lost at the hook, enhancing safety and reliability during operation.

A handheld directional control with variable speed adjustment, allowing for precise positioning of conveyor belts in tight or difficult-to-access areas.

By choosing APPI’s Columbia WD1450 winches, Shaw-Almex has significantly improved their conveyor belt installation and maintenance capabilities. Customer: Mac and Mac Hydrodemolition, Inc.
Location: Langley, BC, Canada
Hoist Model: Columbia HL15000-2A17-X-04 with AutoAdvance Line Spooler
Load Rating: 15,000 pounds on the first layer
Wire Rope Capacity: 756 feet x 9/16″ wire rope
Power Source: 230 VAC / 3 Phase / 60 Hz
Special Features: 5.0 HP brakemotor

Why APPI: Since 1973, Mac and Mac have been developing new ways to use high pressure water in extreme industrial applications. A measure of their success are the patents they hold for the most sophisticated hydrodemolition systems in North America.

Positioning their systems with wire rope hoists is typical for them but on many applications such as bridges, tunnels, large concrete shafts, hydroelectric dams and nuclear facilities, the reduced line capacity and spooling issues caused by fleet angle problems were hampering their ability to utilize their robots.

After reviewing their needs we provided them with one of our Columbia HL15000 AC hoists equipped with an AutoAdvance line spooler that mitigates all the issues they had with proper line spooling. Time previously lost to correcting those problems has been eliminated as has the need for their personnel to try to adjust the wire rope spooling by hand.

Application: Rooftop High Lift Hoist System
Customer: Crystal Services
Location: Indus, Alberta, Canada
Hoist Model: Columbia HL7000-4A17-L-04
Load rating: 7,400 pounds on the first layer
Line Speed: 21 feet per minute on the first layer
Wire Rope Capacity: 957 feet X ½” diameter wire rope
Power source: 460 VAC / Three Phase / 60 Hz
Special features: NEMA 4X control enclosure with variable frequency drive, NEMA 4X 15’ hand held pendant controls with speed potentiometer and UP/DOWN momentary buttons, AutoAdvance Line Spooler with inverted orientation for ceiling mount, nylatron sheaves for ½” wire rope, large cable capacity drum for 670’ of ½” wire rope.

Why APPI: Tower cranes provide an efficient material handling solution for high-lift applications on long duration projects such as new construction and major renovation projects. The high cost associated with renting and setting up a tower crane, or a mobile crane when building heights would allow their use, makes them prohibitively expensive for smaller projects.

Crystal Services, a leading industrial rigging company in Alberta, Canada, turned to APPI while researching for an alternative to the high cost of using a tower crane for high-lift applications. They required a high lift hoist system that could be transported to the top of a building freight elevators that would not sacrifice capacity or speed to ensure their projects came in on time and budget.

Working closely with Crystal Services Operations Manager, Cam Moody, it was determined one of our Columbia HL7000-4A17-L-04 AC electric hoists would meet their performance requirements. By adding one of our proprietary AutoAdvance Line Spoolers – installed in an inverted position – proper line spooling, even with minimal fleet angle, was ensured.

Cam indicated that this high lift hoist system has worked so well as an alternative to using a tower crane they are expanding their business and will be adding additional systems in the near future.

Why APPI: If you are not familiar with the James Webb Space Telescope project we would encourage you take a look at this link before reading any further https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/webb/main/index.html.

As you can see, the work is complex, technical, extremely sensitive – and extremely expensive. After a rigorous vetting process we were very pleased when three of our Columbia HL15000 hoists with variable frequency drives to control the line speed were specified to suspend the telescope while it is being tested inside NASA’s simulation chamber.

With our AutoAdvance Line Spoolers to ensure proper wire rope spooling and the ability to operate the hoists at extremely slow speeds our hoists were the perfect match for this once in a life time application.

Application: Columbia stage hoist for setting and striking theater props and lights
Customer: Entertainment Industry Distributor
Location: Hollywood, California
Model number: Columbia HG500 “Stage Hoist System”
Line Pull: 500 pounds
Line Speed: Up to 56 feet per minute
Wire Rope Capacity: 220 feet x 3/8″ diameter synthetic line
Power Source: 230 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz
Special Features: Custom stage hoist package designed specifically for theater use

Why APPI: Overhead hoists are ubiquitous in the entertainment industry but the challenge we were given was to design a low profile, roll around, self-contained stage hoist with a capacity of 500 pounds that could be easily positioned and rigged to pull in any direction above it.

The key to the success of the final product is one of our AutoAdvance Line Spoolers that is aligned with vertical, conical fairlead to allow for any angle of overhead pull. A major benefit of this feature is that a series of lifts can be made in different locations without moving the hoist.

Equipped with one of our HG500-2A17-L-03 Columbia hoists, the system features a proportional joy stick that is connected to a variable frequency drive. With it, an operator can move from stop to full speed and back to stop again with precise control over the load – whether lifting or lowering.

With 220 feet of 3/8” diameter synthetic line on the drum and the ability to be towed – even through narrow doorways – our HG500-2A17-L-03 stage hoist is quicker than Captain America to solve rigging problems.

Please contact us if you would like more information about this particular stage hoist or any of our other products and services.

Customer: The Strong Company, Inc.
Location: Pine Bluff, Arkansas
Winch model: Columbia W2000-1A25-L-02 AC Winch
Special features: AutoAdvance Line Spooler
Line pull: 2,000 pounds on the first layer
Line speed: 0-8 feet per minute on the first layer
Power source: 115 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz

Why APPI: Over a period of time, corrosion can lead to a drainpipe collapsing and causing catastrophic road failure. The Strong Company, a leading manufacturer in the specialty cement industry, has developed a revolutionary new system that addresses this common problem without the need for road closures and the cost of excavating and replacing the pipe. Strong’s “Storm Seal” application technique creates a cement lining by spin-casting material to repair the pipe. In addition, our Columbia W2000 AC winch with an AutoAdvance Line Spooler ensures proper spooling regardless of the approach angle of the line to the pipe opening.

This AC repair winch is powered by a 3/4 horsepower motor using a 115-volt electric motor. A manual freespool lever allows the operator to disconnect the drum from the geartrain and pull the wire to the starting position. A NEMA 4X rated handheld pendant with momentary contacts for forward and reverse. A speed potentiometer allows the operator to vary the pulling speed, which determines the thickness of the coating. The AC winch is mounted on the bed of a service truck, and the line is rigged to the drainpipe opening using change of direction sheaves.

Application: DC electric recovery winch for Mars Rover
Customer: MDA / NASA
Location: Richmond, British Columbia
Line Pull: 130 pounds
Line Speed: 5 feet per minute
Capacity: 45 feet X 4 mm synthetic rope on single layer
Power Source: 24 VDC
Special Features: Custom hoist with AutoAdvance Line Spooler, integral load cell, 24 VDC motor and spring-applied, electrically-released brake.

Why APPI: Although some areas on our planet remain largely unexplored, NASA is moving on to bigger and better discoveries in our solar system. By utilizing robots and rovers, they gather data to understand Earth’s celestial neighbors better. The highest on the list of priorities is the long-held hope for a better understanding of Mars, as it appears to be potentially inhabitable and is of terrestrial nature, not dissimilar from the Earth.

MDA of Richmond, British Columbia was asked to examine the possibility of an alternative rover configuration as heavier and larger rovers are limited in the terrain they can traverse and are in danger of becoming entrapped in the sandy soil of Mars. This is how the Mars Spirit rover became immobilized.

With that goal, MDA designed a prototype package for NASA, including the micro Kapvik rover tethered to a larger rover with a DC electric recovery winch.

The specifications on this particular project were very exact. It can’t be fixed at 50 million miles from Earth if something goes wrong. To simulate the performance of the micro-rover in Mars-like conditions (rocks, sand, and freezing temps), MDA decided to test the concept on one of Earth’s deserts.

Allied Power Products Inc. (APPI) in Beaverton, OR, has a track record of creating job-specific winch and hoist solutions. Hence, MDA’s Jakub Brelski turned to them for their assistance with their DC electric hoist requirement. Due to the project’s technical specifications, experience and expertise were the primary criteria by which the selection was made. In addition, this job would be an exacting custom build, so a good supplier was of tremendous value to MDA.

This project’s unique aspect was APPI’s AutoAdvance Line Spooler (AALS) system that would solve bird nesting issues and guarantee perfect spooling each time. The focus of the design is a retainer around the primary spooler sheave and a unique drum design that prevents the rope from entangling and foiling a multi-million dollar mission. This AALS technology also allowed the integration of other special features, such as a highly accurate load cell to monitor line tension. Also present was an electric encoder that converted revolutions into pulses to calculate line speed and payout distance.

The gearbox utilized synthetic oil specifically designed to perform in low temperatures. Also of note was the size of the recovery winch at only 14 kg, with a drum that was less than 6″ wide. These small dimensions are critical as space, and weight constraints demand compact size on interplanetary missions where fuel capacity and use are at a premium.

Mr. Brelski has indicated that the winch test went well and appeared to be a promising approach for attaching the smaller vehicle to the larger parent rover. Although still in the planning phases, if NASA selects MDA to deliver the micro-rover package for its next mission to Mars, it will be reassured in knowing that APPI had a hand in providing this reliable solution.

Application: AC powered recovery sonar winch
Customer: University of Hawaii
Location: Hawaii
Line Pull: 3,900 pounds
Line Speed: 83 feet per minute
Cable Capacity: 1900 feet X 5/8″ wire rope
Power Source: 230 VAC / Three Phase / 60 Hz
Special Features: Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) recently produced this custom AC powered sonar recovery winch for use on the University of Hawaii’s newest ocean research vessel.

Why APPI: Although initially specified to be equipped with interchangeable drums to accommodate varying line sizes, APPI provided the university with an alternative single drum design that exceeded their requirements.

All aluminum construction of the AC electric winch protects it from corrosion and keeps the overall weight below the university’s requirements. Equipped with a 10 hp motor, the sonar winch has 3,900 pounds of line pull at a maximum line speed of 83 feet per minute on the first layer of line on the drum.

APPI’s proprietary AutoAdvance Line Spooler system assures proper spooling on the drum, which solves the fleet angle or bird-nesting. A variable frequency drive provides speed and torque control and digital display, protected within a NEMA 4x enclosure, meters line speed, wire rope distance, and load. The electrically released brake is spring applied with an optional manual override release.

The overall sonar recovery winch package is approximately 6 feet deep, 3.5 feet wide, and 6.5 feet tall. The drum will store over 4,300 feet of sonar cable or 1,900 feet of 5/8″ wire rope.
