WHY APPI:

P & M Mechanical, Inc. faced a specific challenge in their construction project: efficiently and safely transporting materials and mechanical units between ground level and rooftop. With precise requirements outlined in their project specifications, they needed a reliable solution that would meet these exacting standards.

Terry Wideman, President of P & M Mechanical, Inc., explains their collaborative approach: “We had a project that spec’d out using a hoist and davit crane to raise and lower construction materials and mechanical units between the ground and roof levels. We called Allied Power Products, Inc. and after some application discussions, we were comfortable with anticipated performance and we moved forward with purchasing their 500 lb. davit crane and HD670 AC electric hoist.”

Through consultative discussions, P & M Mechanical determined that the Columbia rooftop crane and hoist system would provide the optimal solution for their specific needs.

Key features of this solution include:

High line capacity suitable for construction materials

Superior line speed for efficient material transport

Compact, roof-friendly design with secure pedestal mounting

Reliable performance in demanding construction environments

According to Wideman, the construction project has progressed well, with the Columbia rooftop crane and hoist proving “well suited for safely and efficiently bringing materials to the rooftop construction area.”

Application: Portable Davit Cranes, City of Dallas Waste Water Treatment Plant
Customer: Archer-Western Contractor LTD.
Location: Dallas, TX
Davit Model: Two (2) Columbia 20AAM Davit Crane with Manual Hoists
Wire Rope Capacity: 35 feet x 5/16″ diameter wire rope
Special Features: Wire rope quick-disconnect

Why APPI: As part of the upgrade for an existing waste water treatment facility, the City of Dallas, Texas, included portable davit cranes located at the screen structure to lift and lower stop logs and dewatering pumps.

Their application required 400 pounds of lift at a 60″ radius and 22 feet of hook travel distance in a package that could be easily moved between three work locations and one of our Columbia 20AAM portable davit cranes was a perfect fit. The pumps and stop logs have a section of wire rope that is attached to them while they are in service so the hoist has a quick disconnect that accepts a ferrule on the bitter end of each wire rope assembly.

In operation, stop logs and dewatering pumps are lifted at three locations, each with a permanently mounted pedestal base, and then moved on a cart and positioned under another one of our 20AAM davit cranes. This second crane is used to lift the stop logs and pumps two stories to the main floor. This sequence is reversed when these components are returned to service.

Working closely with Archer-Western’s Construction Project Manager, Joshua Stombaugh, we were able to ensure our portable davit cranes met – or exceeded – the requirements of the City of Dallas for this application.

Application: 1-ton Capacity Stiff Leg Davit Crane for Commercial Fishing Pier
Customer: Certex / Port of Ventura
Location: Ventura, California
Hoist Model: Columbia HR3-2000-4A34-L
Line Pull: 2,000 pounds
Line Speed: 46 feet per minute
Wire Rope Capacity: 75 feet x 3/8″ diameter wire rope
Power Source: 460 VAC / Three Phase / 60 Hz
Special Features: This stiff leg davit crane was designed and manufactured by APPI to meet the Port of Ventura’s specifications. Their requirements included 14 feet of reach from the center of rotation and 23 feet of elevation above dock level with the boom fully elevated. Unlike a typical davit crane or jib crane that relies on the base to stabilize it, the crane uses three “stiff legs” to hold it in position. It features a manually rotated boom with an epoxy overcoat and stainless steel hardware for corrosion resistance. Four RAB light assemblies are mounted at the top of the mast to provide 24-hour usage.

The Columbia HR3-2000-4A34-L AC electric hoist features a continuous-duty gear motor selected to meet the customer’s speed requirement and a custom rotary limit-switch assembly with adjustable upper and lower limits for the 75′ travel distance. The hoist also features a cable tension roller and custom overhaul ball above the hook to help prevent slack line conditions when not under load.

The variable speed controls are housed in a NEMA 4X stainless steel enclosure with shielding to minimize internal temperatures during operation. An hour meter is mounted on the face of the housing to track the usage of the system. A speed potentiometer on the custom NEMA 4X hand-held pendant control allows for both accurate positioning and high-speed movement of cargo. In addition, a separate fiberglass enclosure houses a customer-supplied key card security system to prevent unauthorized use of the crane.

Why APPI: The Port of Ventura had an aging, stiff leg davit crane system that had performed well for fishermen offloading catch as well as assisting in raising and lowering vessel parts needed for refurbishing. After considering a number of options, APPI was selected as the supplier based on the design they conceived for the crane. The crane was subsequently manufactured in Oregon and shipped to the site for installation.
