Application: Pump hoist maintenance system
Customer: Lafollette Mining Supply Co
Location: Jacksboro, TN
Hoist Model: Columbia HL12000-4A17-L-02 AC Electric Hoists
Trolley Model: Motorized 15-ton Hammerhead Trolley
Performance based on 460 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz:

Line Pull: Maximum of 24,000 lbs. at the hook on each hammerhead. Maximum system lift limited to 30,000 lbs. by user.

Line Speed: 6 feet per minute on the first layer

Wire Rope Capacity: 300 ft. X 1/2″ diameter stainless steel rope

Special Features: Motorized hammerhead trolleys. Synchronized controls for entire system.

WHY APPI:

Local PUD engineers rejected a hoist design for lifting 15,000-pound pumps. As a result, Billy Ball, the Sales Manager for Lafollette Mining Supply, began searching for a reliable solution provider. He told us he chose APPI because of our strong customer reviews and our wide range of successful applications.

Lafollette Mining Supply clearly outlined their needs. First, they wanted a barge-mounted hoist system to lift heavy pumps from depths up to 125 feet. Additionally, the system needed to work in a marine setting. Furthermore, it had to fit within their existing crane frame’s limited headroom. Finally, the design needed to move pumps fore and aft during maintenance.

After detailed discussions, Lafollette Mining Supply and APPI together crafted an effective solution. We agreed on a system using two Columbia HL12000 Hoists paired with two motorized 15-ton hammerhead trolleys. This setup delivers up to 30,000 pounds of line pull to free pumps from depth. Moreover, it keeps pumps at a steady height while the trolley moves across the deck.

This jointly developed pump hoist system offers several key benefits:

The high-efficiency planetary reductions create a compact design

The 5 HP TEFC UL-listed brake motors ensure reliable operation

Synchronized controls allow for precise handling of heavy pumps

Billy happily reported that PUD engineers quickly approved our solution. Subsequently, the team has been impressed with the system’s performance in daily operations.

Why APPI:

Stringing and tensioning conveyor belts in mining environments create a challenge that requires specialized equipment. Shaw-Almex, a leading supplier of conveyor belt vulcanizing and splicing equipment, recognized the need for a reliable solution to address these challenges. They turned to Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) for a custom-engineered winch system designed specifically for conveyor belt tensioning in harsh mining conditions.

APPI provided Shaw-Almex with eight Columbia WD1450 units, each tailored to meet the demanding requirements of mining operations. These winches feature:

Variable frequency drives housed in NEMA 4X rated control enclosures, ensuring protection against dust and water in challenging mining environments.

APPI’s innovative Columbia AutoAdvance Line Spooler, which guarantees perfect spooling regardless of pulling angle – a crucial feature for the complex layouts often found in mines.

Tensioning plates that prevent wire rope nesting when tension is lost at the hook, enhancing safety and reliability during operation.

A handheld directional control with variable speed adjustment, allowing for precise positioning of conveyor belts in tight or difficult-to-access areas.

By choosing APPI’s Columbia WD1450 winches, Shaw-Almex has significantly improved their conveyor belt installation and maintenance capabilities. The winches’ robust design and advanced features enable mining operations to streamline their conveyor belt tensioning processes, reducing downtime and increasing overall efficiency.

Application: Columbia AC Electric Chute Hoist Positions Pot Ash Chute
Customer: Mosaic Potash
Location: Colonsay, Saskatchewan – Canada
Hoist Model: Columbia HF2300-5A17-L-02
Line Pull: 2,300 pounds on the first layer
Line Speed: 12 feet per minute on the first layer
Power Source: 575 VAC / Three Phase / 60 Hz
Special Features: 575 VAC brakemotor with low voltage controls and cable tension plate

Why APPI: As a part of their overall operations, a chute moving raw material between processing machinery isn’t a big deal in the Mosaic Potash plant in Colonsay – until that pipe has to be moved numerous times to allow a crane to move past it for routine maintenance.

The solution that brought an end to the difficult and time-consuming task of manually rigging it every time it need to be moved was to install one of our Columbia HF2300 AC electric hoists to lift the pipe and pivot it out of the way. With its cast, machined and fully sealed construction along with a totally enclosed, fan cooled brake motor it was the ideal choice for the rugged conditions where it will be working.

Chris Maierhoffer, their Applied Process Engineer at the site, said our ability to provide the hoist with a 575 VAC motor in short order and provide a pressure plate to keep the line properly wound on the drum when the chute was down and in a no-load position helped make it easy for him to specify our unit.

Please contact us if you would like more information about this particular chute hoist or any of our other products and services.

Application: Conveyor Belt Tensioning Winch System
Location: Canada
Winch model: Columbia WG9000-1A17-L-02
Line Pull: 9,000 pounds on the first layer
Line Speed: 2.6 feet per minute on the first layer
Wire Rope Capacity: 31 feet x ⅜” diameter wire rope with latching hook
Power Source: 115 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz
Special features: 3:1 gearbox reduction brakemotor

Why APPI: To eliminate a tedious process that required a ratchet binder to tension the conveyor belt at one of their potash production facilities, our customer went shopping for a conveyor tensioning winch system to perform the task.

Although the performance requirements were not out of the ordinary, the power limitations and confined space quickly eliminated other sources to supply it.

After consulting with their project engineer and engineering consultant, one of our Columbia AC winches with a brake motor/gearbox providing an additional 3:1 reduction was selected.

In use, the winch pulls the conveyor tensioning mechanism a maximum of 12.5 feet with the 3/8” diameter wire.

As the line is wound on a single layer – and held in place with a tension plate – the line pull and line speed remain constant.

Once the belt has been properly tensioned, it is mechanically pinned in place to relieve the live load from the winch.

Why APPI: Located on the upper Monongahela River, Vance River Terminal has been loading barges with coal, sand, gravel, limestone and soil since 1940. The operation is straight forward with the material being placed into endless strings of barges with a gravity feed system. The critical key to keeping things moving smoothly are the spout hoists that are constantly adjusted to keep the barges floating on the level.

For more than a decade VRT has standardized on our Columbia AC electric hoists for their spout positioning requirements. The combination of compact size, high efficiency and minimal maintenance combined with virtually 100% availability regardless of weather conditions has given them a high approval rating by both management and operators.

Why APPI: High in the Andes mountains, a large copper mine depends on one our Columbia HG5600 hoists to lift a grate that hangs in a sluice to catch any solids that may get past prior screening points.

The grate is on a swinging arm so when it is lifted its basket shape holds the material. The mine hoist and grate assembly are mounted on an overhead frame that travels at 90 degrees to the sluice to a dump location.

The lifting distance is short – less than 5 feet – but keeping the grate clean is critical to the overall operation at the site. The operator controls the hoist with a pushbutton control and with 15 feet of pendant wire they have a clear view of the operation at all time.

With a motor matched to local voltage, efficient planetary reduction and a permanently-lubricated gear train, this mine hoist will provide maximum life with minimum maintenance – which is especially important when it is working at 8,000 feet above sea level.

Application: Columbia radial stacking conveyor hoist used for lifting an 80-foot long conveyor
Customer: Kolberg-Pioneer, Inc.
Location: Yankton, SD
Hoist model: Columbia HL8000-4A17-X-02
Special features: 10.0 HP TEFC UL-listed inverter duty brakemotor
Line pull: 8,000 pounds on the first layer
Line speed: 33.6 feet per minute on the first layer
Power source: 460 VAC / Three Phase / 60 Hz

Why APPI: With a belt measuring 80 feet long and 54 inches wide, a radial stacking conveyor recently delivered by Kolberg-Pioneer is building small mountains of wood chips for their customer in Hazelhurst, Georgia, at a rate of up to 450 tons per hour. Keeping the conveyor tip above the top of the pile is a task assigned to one of our Columbia HL8000 hoists.

Rated at 8,000 lbs of line pull with a line speed of just under 34 feet a minute on the first layer, it is rigged with two parts of line to double the effective line pull. The gear train is totally enclosed and receives a continuous oil bath inside the cast and machined hoist housings and supports.

A 10 hp severe duty motor controlled through a Variable Frequency Drive, planetary reduction, an automatic brake, and extremely durable polyurethane paint all contribute to making this unit the perfect choice as the radial stacking conveyor hoist on this machine.
