Why APPI: Nothing can provide a better endorsement for an industrial product than seeing one doing what you need to get done. In this case, employees working for Sarah Harvey, Project Coordinator for Steadfast Roofing Ltd, saw another contractor on the same job site using one of our HMH roofing material hoists to raise and lower construction materials. Given its light weight, portability and ease of use, it was a short connection from there to Sarah ordering two of them for her crew to use.

Application: Lifting roofing materials for cleaning during manufacturing
Customer: GAF
Location: Ennis, TX
Hoist Model: HMH-230-1XWB
Line Speed: 74 feet per minute on the first layer
Power Source: 115 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz

Why APPI: At GAF, a small but critical part of the manufacturing process for commercial and residential roofing involves rinsing contaminants off certain parts in a bucket, and then lifting the bucket above the sink in order to drain the water from the holes in the bottom.

While this application barely requires 100 pounds of lift to raise the bucket, in operation it was difficult and dangerous for one person to maneuver manually. Tasked with implementing a more reliable solution that could be safely operated with one person, Austin Helmreich, Project Engineer at GAF, turned to APPI in order to ease this burden. A Columbia HMH-230 bucket hoist was specified to accomplish this task, and installing it was simple due to the bail mount hangar design of the hoist and the existing support frame for raising the bucket.

Please contact us if you would like more information about this bucket hoist or any of our other products and services.

Why APPI: Lifting glass windows without using a crane is an obvious cost saving choice. Lifting them into place when access is very limited requires a hoisting method that is both flexible and reliable. When Culver glass faced a tough access situation they came to us for help.

After reviewing their needs it was quickly determined one of our Columbia “Hook Mounted Hoists” was an ideal match. The hoist is easy to move from location to location and provides a welcome reduction in time and effort for the workers using it.

Application: Hook mounted portable hoist for lifting metal studs during construction
Customer: Dahmer Contracting Group, Lenexa Kansas
Hoist Model: Columbia HMH-600 AC Hoist
Line Pull: 600 pounds on the first layer
Line Speed: 37 feet per minute on the first layer
Wire Rope Capacity: 82 feet x 1/4″ wire rope with latching swivel hook
Power Source: 115 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz
Standard Features: Bail and safety latch mount, Pushbutton control pendant with E-Stop button and 32’ lead, 16’ power cord, Upper and lower limit sensors, Automatic load suspending brake, Secondary ratchet & pawl brake, 5 HP, IP44 rated motor

Why APPI: “Lightweight metal stud” becomes a terminology oxymoron when you work with large ones that are 46 feet in length and weigh in at 185 pounds.

To cut construction time and make lifting these unwieldy pieces safer and easier for their framing crews, Dahmer Contracting Group of Lenexa, Kansas, is using one of our Columbia HMH-600 hook mounted portable hoists to lift two studs at a time from horizontal to vertical. With a weight of less than 60 pounds it’s easy to hang and move from one lifting position to another as framing progresses. The lifting speed of this hook mounted portable hoist makes it possible to lift the longest of these pieces to vertical and be ready to anchor in less than a minute. As it operates on 115 VAC, it’s usable even at job sites that are on generator power.

Please contact us if you would like more information about this particular hook mounted portable hoist system or any of our other products and services.

Why APPI: Frank Powell from Kelly Cove Salmon says, “We have been busy spawning Atlantic salmon here for the past 2 months. We use our Columbia overhead hoist to dip out the mature salmon from our land based brood stock tanks with a dip net connected to it. The line speed of the hoist enables us to lift the dip net loads of fish quite quickly. In the past, we did all this dipping manually and it made for some really sore backs! Over the course of this season we stripped eggs from approximately 3,500 female salmon and these weigh an average of 15-20 lbs. We sorted through the holding stock of 4500 fish multiple times so from the beginning of the season until we finished up yesterday we dipped over 135,000 lbs of salmon using our overhead hoist.”
