Why APPI:

George’s Foods, LLC, a leading poultry processing company, sought a reliable and low-maintenance hoist solution for their facility in Harrisonburg, VA. The hoist would be a critical component in their production process and needed to operate efficiently in multiple locations within the plant, including hazardous areas.

Phil Shifflet, a sales representative from Ferebee-Johnson Company, an industrial supplier in Harrisonburg, VA, was tasked with finding the ideal hoist for George’s Foods. After conducting thorough research and engaging in application discussions with Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI), it was determined that the Columbia HD2000 pneumatic hoist would best meet the customer’s requirements.

The Columbia HD2000 pneumatic hoist offers a line pull of 2,000 pounds on the first layer and a line speed of 19 feet per minute, providing ample power and speed for the poultry processing plant’s needs. With a wire rope capacity of 84 feet x 5/16″ diameter and a latching hook, the hoist ensures secure lifting and positioning of materials throughout the facility.

One of the key advantages of the Columbia HD2000 pneumatic hoist is its versatility in installation and use across multiple locations. The hoist’s pneumatic power source, requiring 80 SCFM and 70 PSI, allows for flexible placement and operation within the plant, including hazardous areas where electric hoists may not be suitable.

Why APPI: Melissa Headland, a manufacturing engineer at Dow Agro, came to us with a very specific set of application requirements for hoisting and moving a filter basket on one of their production lines.. Her line pull and line speed requirements were met with one of our standard HD2000 pneumatic hoists but limited headroom and the need for a powered trolley required a custom design.

Given a total of just under 6 feet below the I-beam on which the hoist would travel and a handrail the filter basket had to be lifted over prior to moving it laterally, clearance was very limited. Our solution was a custom low profile pneumatic hoist and powered trolley package with power for both motors coming from the same air source.

As a portion of the available lead time to source this hoist had been consumed in their search for a hoist package that fit their available space, we provided them with a manual trolley to use until their custom designed one was completed.

Columbia Die Hoist Assists in Die Ring Replacement

Why APPI: When you are the world leader in equipment that grinds, crushes, crumbles, breaks, flakes, hulls, hammers, shreds and pelletizes a nearly endless list of food and fodder you also must be a world leader in maintaining that equipment. CPM is that leader and to help maintain that position they have standardized on our HD2000 pneumatic hoists packaged for use on their die hoist trolleys for more than 15 years.

Adam Benner, their Product Engineering Manager says, “Our pellet mills have consumable parts that must be mounted, removed, and replaced regularly and our Columbia die hoists allow us to do that safely, quickly, and reliably. To help keep their production process as efficient as possible the pneumatic die trolley hoist is provided on a mounting bracket with the directional control valve mounted and plumbed on it. This reduces installation for CPM to putting in four bolts and connecting two hoses.

The photos show CPM customers using the die handling hoist rigged with two-parts of line to put a die ring weighing 3500 lb. into position for installation on a pellet mill.
