Why APPI:

Resurfacing the inside of a culvert with cement is a job that demands precise, consistent speed over distances of up to 500 feet. Even small variations in pull rate can lead to uneven coating thickness — which means the winch doing the pulling has to be dialed in and controllable. When one of Motion Industries’ clients faced this challenge, Mike McDougle, On-Site Senior Customer Service Representative for Motion Industries, reached out to Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) to find the right culvert resurfacing winch for the job.

Mike came with two clear requirements shaped by real field conditions. First, the winch needed variable frequency drive controls so the operator could maintain a consistent line speed as line builds up on the drum. Second, since the cement sprayer would be working at remote job sites with no facility power available, the winch had to run on a portable single-phase generator.

After reviewing the application requirements together, Motion Industries and APPI jointly determined that the Columbia WG1600 AC electric winch was the right fit. The winch pulls the skid-mounted cement sprayer through the culvert while it applies a fresh cement lining across the full 360-degree interior surface.

Key features of this culvert resurfacing winch system include:
  1. Variable Frequency Drive with Speed Potentiometer: Allows the operator to dial in and hold a consistent line speed — essential for applying a uniform coating thickness as wire rope accumulates on the drum.
  2. 500-Foot Wire Rope Capacity: Provides enough reach to pull the sprayer through the full length of even the longest culvert runs without interruption.
  3. Single-Phase Power Input: Designed to operate on 115 VAC single-phase power, making the winch fully compatible with portable generator power at remote job sites.
  4. Tension Plate: Keeps the wire rope properly seated on the drum when the load is reduced or the hook is slack, helping maintain reliable spooling throughout the job.
This culvert resurfacing winch system provides several benefits:
  • Consistent Coating Quality: Adjustable speed control helps the operator maintain a steady pull rate, supporting a more uniform cement application across the full culvert interior.
  • Remote Site Ready: Single-phase compatibility means the system can go wherever the job is, without relying on fixed facility power.
  • Reliable Operation: The cable tension plate and variable frequency drive work together to keep the winch performing smoothly from start to finish.

By working together to select APPI’s Columbia WG1600 winch, Motion Industries and their client gained a purpose-built solution for culvert resurfacing — one that handles the precision demands of the application in conditions where off-the-shelf equipment often falls short.
