Application: AC Electric Hoist and Powered Trolley for Elephant House Food Transport
Customer: Oregon Zoo
Location: Portland, Oregon
Line Pull: 1,000 pounds bare drum
Line Speed: 22 feet per minute bare drum
Cable Capacity: 40 feet x 5/16″ diameter wire rope
Power Source: 460 VAC / Three Phase / 60 Hz

Why APPI: The Oregon Zoo’s new Elephant House expansion is designed to allow visitors to observe the elephants during feeding and interaction. There are two access levels for the personnel: ground level and overhead walkway. The zoo requested a low-profile hoist and powered trolley design that would have low visibility to the public while remaining above the elephant’s reach during operation. Hoist and trolley durability and longevity were vital due to their constant interaction with the elephants.

APPI designed the equipment to traverse a 60′ beam radius while operating on wide flange and S–beam configurations to meet these requirements. The radio remote controls allow the operator an unobstructed operational view during elephant feeding. In addition, a custom-designed flapper-style limit switch assembly was added to ensure the feeding container could overtravel during its raising in case of operator error.

Allied Power Products, Inc., manufacturer of Columbia Winches & Hoists, provides custom solutions for all material moving applications. APPI worked closely with the Oregon Zoo project engineer to customize an appropriate control system for the flood gate and provide user-friendly, reliable operation.
