Why APPI:

When the City of Vancouver and Walla Walla Foundry embarked on installing Rodney Graham’s ambitious Spinning Chandelier beneath the Granville Street Bridge, they faced an extraordinary engineering challenge: creating a reliable chandelier hoist system capable of precisely maneuvering a 3.5-tonne art installation twice daily in Vancouver’s demanding outdoor environment.

The project, approved by the City in 2015 and taking more than three years to design and manufacture, required hoists that could safely handle the chandelier’s massive dimensions—eight by four metres—while providing the exact control necessary for both vertical positioning and spinning movements. The kinetic sculpture, constructed from stainless steel, LED lights, and more than 600 polyurethane crystals, needed to descend from its holding position, perform its spinning sequence, and return safely to the dark underbelly of the north viaduct twice each day. After extensive collaboration between the project team and Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI), the solution centered around six Columbia H10000 hoists specifically configured for this unique artistic application.

Working closely with Walla Walla Foundry and city engineers, APPI and the project team jointly determined that the Columbia H10000-4A17-X-01G configuration would best meet the installation’s demanding requirements.

Key features of this collaborative chandelier hoist system solution include:

Six synchronized Columbia H10000 hoists providing redundant lifting capacity and precise control for the fragile artwork

Inverter-rated brake motors with absolute encoders, ensuring accurate positioning during the chandelier’s daily performance cycles

Comprehensive monitoring systems including temperature control, brake wear detection, and motor heating to maintain reliable operation in Vancouver’s variable weather conditions

Custom grooved drum assemblies engineered specifically for this application’s cable management requirements

This innovative hoist system enables the Spinning Chandelier to perform its scheduled rotations and vertical movements twice daily with the precision required for both artistic impact and public safety. The chandelier, suspended above the busy intersection of Beach Avenue and Granville Street and affiliated with the striking Vancouver House development, operates reliably thanks to the robust design features collaboratively developed for this unique application.

By implementing this custom Columbia chandelier hoist system, the City of Vancouver has successfully created a landmark art installation that combines artistic vision with engineering excellence. The system’s advanced monitoring and control features ensure safe, reliable operation of this spectacular public artwork.

Why APPI:

FlexSteel Pipeline Technologies, Inc has been a provider of innovative pipe technology since 2005. As such, they needed a partner with the durability and reliability of Columbia Winches & Hoists to provide an AC Electric Winch for long-term usage as a pipe spooling winch. The customer has attempted to use lower-quality winches, but they failed quickly based on the duty cycle. The replacement Columbia units have been working since 2014 without any problems.

WHY APPI:

Vactor, Inc. has built vacuum trucks for sewer cleaning and maintenance for over 50 years. These trucks feature an extendible boom that helps position the vacuum tip easily in different work areas.

In 2009, Vactor chose a Columbia WF7000 AC electric winch with a strap to pull boom parts together during assembly. The winch worked perfectly for 10 years. As a result, Ryan Leman, who supervises the jig and fixture department, reached out to Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) to order another identical unit.

Together, Vactor and APPI confirmed that the Columbia WF7000-4A17-L-23 remained the best choice for their boom assembly work. Moreover, the winch offers several benefits that match Vactor’s needs:

Proven reliability from 10 years of trouble-free operation

Strap drum design that avoids common problems with wire rope

Ideal pulling power and speed control for precise assembly work

Vactor will now use this second Columbia winch in their new production line. Furthermore, Ryan stated they bought another APPI unit “with zero apprehension or doubt about how it would work” – clearly showing their satisfaction with the original Columbia winch.

Application: Removing concrete rubble from job site
Customer: Ceco Concrete Construction
Location: Ham Lake, MN
Winch Model: Columbia WF575-2A17-L-02
Line Pull: 575 pounds on the first layer
Line Speed: 74 feet per minute on the first layer
Power Source: 230 VAC / Single phase / 60 Hz
Special features: 1.5 HP inverter duty motor, cable tension plate, VFD in a NEMA 4X rated aluminum enclosure with IP65 rated pendant with speed potentiometer

Why APPI: From their office in Minneapolis, Ceco Concrete provides a wide variety of concrete related construction services. One of the constant by products of their work are large volumes of concrete rubble. Removing it with push carts and wheels barrows was a strenuous, labor intensive and time consuming process.

One of their field supervisors, Bob Nosbush, contacted us to find a winch that could be used to pull the carts. His target was a minimum of 200 pounds of line pull with a minimum speed of 75 feet per minute. He also wanted to run the winch off 230 single phase power coming from his portable generator. And, last but not least, he needed a duty cycle of at least 40 minutes per hour.

On site, our WF575 cart pulling winch pulls carts on 100-foot long tracks and stops only long enough to load and unload. The VFD allows the operator to increase and decrease speed smoothly and avoid shock loads to the winch and rigging. The increase in production has been noticeable – as has been the attitude of the crew that no longer has to push the carts for 8 hours a day.

Please contact us if you would like more information about this cart pulling winch or any of our other products and services.

Why APPI: If you should happen the ride “Turbo Track”, a reverse free fall coaster at Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi designed and manufactured by Intamin, you may sense how thoroughly your safety has been addressed before taking the ride and having your wits scared out of you. What you won’t see that helps create that sense of security are two maintenance bays where each of the cars are serviced twice on a daily basis.

To move the cars in and out of the bays, Tobias Jeck, the project engineer for Intamin for this attraction, specified two of our WF2100 electric winches for each bay – one to pull a string of cars in and the other to pull them out. Their compact size and our ability to provide them with straps were key features in his selection process.

From project design in Liechtenstein, to winch manufacturing in Oregon, to delivery and installation in Dhubi, the combined efforts of all parties involved resulted in a system that works exactly as envisioned.
