Why APPI:

When the City of Vancouver and Walla Walla Foundry embarked on installing Rodney Graham’s ambitious Spinning Chandelier beneath the Granville Street Bridge, they faced an extraordinary engineering challenge: creating a reliable chandelier hoist system capable of precisely maneuvering a 3.5-tonne art installation twice daily in Vancouver’s demanding outdoor environment.

The project, approved by the City in 2015 and taking more than three years to design and manufacture, required hoists that could safely handle the chandelier’s massive dimensions—eight by four metres—while providing the exact control necessary for both vertical positioning and spinning movements. The kinetic sculpture, constructed from stainless steel, LED lights, and more than 600 polyurethane crystals, needed to descend from its holding position, perform its spinning sequence, and return safely to the dark underbelly of the north viaduct twice each day. After extensive collaboration between the project team and Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI), the solution centered around six Columbia H10000 hoists specifically configured for this unique artistic application.

Working closely with Walla Walla Foundry and city engineers, APPI and the project team jointly determined that the Columbia H10000-4A17-X-01G configuration would best meet the installation’s demanding requirements.

Key features of this collaborative chandelier hoist system solution include:

Six synchronized Columbia H10000 hoists providing redundant lifting capacity and precise control for the fragile artwork

Inverter-rated brake motors with absolute encoders, ensuring accurate positioning during the chandelier’s daily performance cycles

Comprehensive monitoring systems including temperature control, brake wear detection, and motor heating to maintain reliable operation in Vancouver’s variable weather conditions

Custom grooved drum assemblies engineered specifically for this application’s cable management requirements

This innovative hoist system enables the Spinning Chandelier to perform its scheduled rotations and vertical movements twice daily with the precision required for both artistic impact and public safety. The chandelier, suspended above the busy intersection of Beach Avenue and Granville Street and affiliated with the striking Vancouver House development, operates reliably thanks to the robust design features collaboratively developed for this unique application.

By implementing this custom Columbia chandelier hoist system, the City of Vancouver has successfully created a landmark art installation that combines artistic vision with engineering excellence. The system’s advanced monitoring and control features ensure safe, reliable operation of this spectacular public artwork.

Winch System Performance:

Line Pull: 26,800 pounds per winch

Line Speed: 156 feet per minute

Cable Capacity: 244 feet X 3/4″ wire rope on the 5th layer

Power Source: 140 HP Perkins turbo diesel engine

Special Features:

Self-contained skid assembly with dual winches

Joystick controls with digital display

Fluid containment system

High-efficiency planetary reduction system

Rapid reverse capabilities with 4X inhaul speeds

Why APPI:

Advanced American Construction approached Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) with a complex challenge: they needed a winch system that could efficiently manage their construction barge spuds while meeting strict environmental protection requirements for operations in the Columbia River and its estuaries. The system needed to handle rapid deployment and recovery of spuds weighing up to 25,000 pounds each, while ensuring zero environmental impact from hydraulic fluids or other contaminants. Additionally, the system needed to operate reliably in all weather conditions and provide precise control for positioning accuracy.

Through collaborative discussions, Advanced American Construction and APPI determined that a self-contained winch system would be the ideal solution to meet their specific operational and environmental requirements.

Key features of this custom winch system include:

A unique fluid containment design capturing 125% of total system fluids, preventing contamination from rain, snow, or sleet

Dual winches with rapid reverse capabilities, providing 4X inhaul speeds for quick deployment

High-efficiency planetary reductions with precise metering in both directions

Oil bath component design eliminating external lubrication needs

Comprehensive monitoring system with digital display of key parameters

The system’s design includes several essential components:

220-gallon hydraulic tank for optimal heat displacement

50-gallon diesel fuel tank enabling extended operation

Kawasaki pressure compensating pump

Perkins turbo-charged diesel engine

Integrated joystick controls

By implementing this winch system, Advanced American Construction has significantly improved their barge operations. The system’s innovative design and robust construction ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally conscious operations in sensitive marine environments.

FlexSteel Pipeline Technologies, Inc has been a provider of innovative pipe technology since 2005. As such, they needed a partner with the durability and reliability of Columbia Winches & Hoists to provide an AC Electric Winch for long-term usage as a pipe spooling winch. The customer has attempted to use lower-quality winches, but they failed quickly based on the duty cycle. The replacement Columbia units have been working since 2014 without any problems.

This custom-built “marine-grade” salvage winch system is one of Allied Power Products, Inc’s (APPI) recent solutions for use pulling “spuds” and broken pilings from a barge.

With pulling capacities of up to 12,000 pounds on each winch drum, these winches can reach line speeds in excess of 72 feet per minute when pulling and 314 feet per minute in reverse. In addition, each drum offers up to 360 feet X 1/2″ wire rope storage.

A key started, turbocharged 56 HP diesel engine powers this hydraulic system. The winches on this salvage winch system are driven by a high-efficiency planetary reduction with rapid reverse for the operator to set their spud-pulling rigging quickly. Speed can be metered in both directions with a directional control valve. Special features on this unit include a 100-gallon hydraulic reservoir, 12-volt battery pack, throttle control, high temp/low oil shutdowns, and a fuel gauge.

Why APPI: This self-contained aerostat winch system features one of APPI’s proprietary AutoAdvance Line Spoolers with a bull’s-eye fairlead to allow launch and recovery of the aerostat in any direction while maintaining proper spooling of the cable. As the aerostat supports a communication platform, the system’s ability to support precision launching and recovery is a key feature.

The EHS-5-43D hoist system is powered by a 40 HP diesel generator with sound attenuating enclosure. Features of the aerostat winch system include variable speed payout and recovery via proportional joystick controls. A digital measurement package with line speed, distance, and line tension readouts, along with programmable alarms, allow for ease of use and additional operator safety.
