Sparrows Offshore, with over four decades of experience in servicing offshore cranes, approached Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) with a unique challenge. James Schott, a project manager at Sparrows Offshore, contacted APPI seeking a pneumatic hoist with a chain-drive trolley for a critical maintenance operation in the Gulf of Mexico.

The immediate need was to remove the main and luffing hoists from a crane on an oil platform for servicing. After carefully reviewing the application requirements, Sparrows Offshore Manufacturing chose the Columbia HG5000-P-02 pneumatic hoist equipped with a 3-ton chain drive trolley.

Key features of this solution include:

1. Designed for installation on Sparrows’ existing I-Beam maintenance davit on the crane.

The application demanded a hoist capable of lifting 100 pounds to a height of 80 feet “as quickly as possible” while operating safely in a hazardous environment. APPI’s Columbia HF550-P-02 pneumatic hoist offers a line pull of 550 pounds on the first layer and an impressive line speed of 127 feet per minute, exceeding HMT’s requirements for quick vertical transportation of tools and equipment. The hoist’s 100-foot capacity of 3/16″ diameter stainless steel wire rope, complete with an overhaul plate and latching hook, ensures secure and efficient lifting operations.

Key to the selection of the Columbia HF550-P-02 was its suitability for hazardous locations. Why APPI:  Melissa Headland, a manufacturing engineer at Dow Agro, came to us with a very specific set of application requirements for hoisting and moving a filter basket on one of their production lines.. Her line pull and line speed requirements were met with one of our standard HD2000 pneumatic hoists but limited headroom and the need for a powered trolley required a custom design.

Given a total of just under 6 feet below the I-beam on which the hoist would travel and a handrail the filter basket had to be lifted over prior to moving it laterally, clearance was very limited. Our solution was a custom low profile pneumatic hoist and powered trolley package with power for both motors coming from the same air source.

As a portion of the available lead time to source this hoist had been consumed in their search for a hoist package that fit their available space, we provided them with a manual trolley to use until their custom designed one was completed.

Why APPI:  As the number of business class jets manufactured in Canada has risen the impact on support industries has been significant.  Case in point is the Mirabel Aerospace Center (MAC) where Pratt & Whitney Canada has installed the two largest engine test cells in the country.  Each of these can test engines with up to 35,000 pounds of thrust – which includes the PurePower PW1524G for Bombardier C Series aircraft.

The test cells are of course rated as a hazardous environment which meant the hoists used to open and close the engine hatch door inside the test cells, measuring approximately 300 feet long and 100 feet high at their tallest point, had to be rated accordingly.  Buckner of Canada contacted us looking for the right product for the job and after reviewing their requirements two Columbia HF1750-P-02 pneumatic explosion proof hoists were selected for the application.  As this is a Class I Division 1 Group D atmosphere, appropriately rated control valves with 24 VDC solenoids and limit switches were provided with the hoists.

In use, these compact, pneumatic explosion proof hoists have proven to be highly efficient and extremely reliable – which are attributes that apply to everything they do at MAC.

Why APPI: Long Valley Reservoir (Crowley Lake) is the largest reservoir in the Los Angeles Aqueduct System and ultimately the source of drinking water for 4.3 million customers.

To meet California Department of Safety Of Dams requirements, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power must place a three-section segmental plug weighing 5000 pounds 80 feet below the reservoir water line to block an emergency diversion tunnel. Up to 10,000 lbs. of line pull may be required to remove this plug and pull it free.

Critical factors in purchasing this unit were its high-efficiency planetary reduction, sealed construction without any greasing requirements, and automatic brake.
