Why APPI:

Midland Garage Door Manufacturing Company, with over 40 years of experience in manufacturing overhead garage doors for both commercial and residential applications, approached Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) to enhance their manufacturing process. Their production line includes various steel panel doors, each requiring a specific die to be moved in and out of a high-capacity hydraulic press.

Through collaborative discussions, Midland and APPI identified the key requirements for their application:

Reliable system for moving dies in and out of the press

Solution to minimize wear and spooling issues

Easy operation for production staff

Long-term durability for continuous operation

The determined solution was a dual winch system. For over a decade, they have been using two Columbia WD1300-1A34-F-15 AC electric winches in their manufacturing process. One die winch is used to pull a die for a specific panel into the press and when production of that panel ends the other winch pulls the die out of the press.

Key features of this die pull system include:

Strap drum conversion, eliminating wire rope spooling and wear concerns

Freespool control for easy line deployment by operators

Tie rod guide roller for smooth operation

Reliable performance proven through over a decade of continuous use

This custom-designed system offers several benefits:

Efficient die changes during production

Reduced maintenance requirements

Enhanced operator safety

Improved production workflow

Why APPI:

It’s not glamorous, but removing large volumes of cow manure from their barn is a daily requirement at the Birchwood Farm and Dairy. Mike Tierney, their operations manager, recognized the need for a solution that would streamline this essential task and conducted an extensive web search to find the right equipment.

APPI’s expertise in providing specialized winch solutions caught Tierney’s attention. After thorough discussions about various options, Birchwood Farm and Dairy chose two Columbia WD1300 AC electric winches for their manure scraper system.

Key features of this solution include:

Dual Columbia WD1300 winches, providing reliable pull for the manure scraper.

Compact yet powerful units suitable for the confined space of a barn environment.

Customized design to meet specific operational needs, including the removal of brakes.

Cable tensioning plates to ensure proper spooling under varying load conditions.

By implementing APPI’s Columbia winch solution, Birchwood Farm and Dairy has significantly improved their manure removal process. The new system offers:

Enhanced efficiency in daily barn cleaning

Reduced labor requirements

Improved barn hygiene, contributing to better animal health

Consistent performance even with varying loads

Tierney expressed excitement about the time savings the new system will provide, highlighting the positive impact on their daily operations. The Columbia WD1300 winches ensure that the system will continue to operate smoothly and efficiently, even under the challenging conditions of a dairy barn environment.

Why APPI:

Stringing and tensioning conveyor belts in mining environments create a challenge that requires specialized equipment. Shaw-Almex, a leading supplier of conveyor belt vulcanizing and splicing equipment, recognized the need for a reliable solution to address these challenges. They turned to Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) for a custom-engineered winch system designed specifically for conveyor belt tensioning in harsh mining conditions.

APPI provided Shaw-Almex with eight Columbia WD1450 units, each tailored to meet the demanding requirements of mining operations. These winches feature:

Variable frequency drives housed in NEMA 4X rated control enclosures, ensuring protection against dust and water in challenging mining environments.

APPI’s innovative Columbia AutoAdvance Line Spooler, which guarantees perfect spooling regardless of pulling angle – a crucial feature for the complex layouts often found in mines.

Tensioning plates that prevent wire rope nesting when tension is lost at the hook, enhancing safety and reliability during operation.

A handheld directional control with variable speed adjustment, allowing for precise positioning of conveyor belts in tight or difficult-to-access areas.

By choosing APPI’s Columbia WD1450 winches, Shaw-Almex has significantly improved their conveyor belt installation and maintenance capabilities. The winches’ robust design and advanced features enable mining operations to streamline their conveyor belt tensioning processes, reducing downtime and increasing overall efficiency.

• Columbia HF2300 AC Electric Hoist
• Columbia WD850 AC Electric Hoist
     • Special Features: -02 drum, lagged and grooved for 5/16” diameter wire rope
• Columbia HH-6 Hammerhead Trolley
• Columbia control panel

Power Source: 115 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz

Why APPI: Lifting canvas bags filled with concrete that weigh as much as 2 tons and positioning them on a trailer is challenging at best. When Thib’s Trailers, a family-owned business that provides custom trailers for almost any application, had a customer who needed to perform this task, they turned to us for assistance to provide a system that could do it safely.

The solution is one of our hammerhead trolleys that runs on a 20 foot long I-Beam that extends past the end of the rear deck of the trailer and is supported by A-frames at the front and rear of the trailer. A deck mounted AC electric hoist at the front of the trailer provides the lift and an AC winch with two lines that position the trolley is mounted on top of the I-Beam.

Brad Thibodeaux, Shop Foreman at Thib’s Trailers, preferred the hammerhead system to a conventional hoist on a trolley as it allows for more headroom, does not require a festooned power cord and the trolley is locked in place when the trailer is being moved.

Application: PIG Cart Positioning Winch
Customer: Seaway Crude Pipeline, LLC
Location: Pasadena Station – Houston, TX
Winch Model: Columbia WD900-4A34-L-00
Line Pull: 900 pounds on the first layer
Line Speed: 20.8 feet per minute on the first layer
Power Source: 460 VAC / Three phase / 60 Hz
Special Features:

• Class I Div 1 Group C&D rated 0.75 HP HAZLOC brakemotor
• Custom grooved drum for 3/16” diameter wire rope with dual through drum cable anchor at each flange

Why APPI: Cleaning pipelines with a PIG is a routine maintenance procedure in the oil industry, but an often-overlooked piece of this work is cleaning the PIGs when they become dirty. For Seaway Crude Pipeline, LLC, this task was accomplished by utilizing a maintenance cart rolling on a track at the outlet of the pipeline trap. Their previous procedure to reverse the direction of the cart required the winch operator to disconnect the latching hook from the front of the cart and run it through a sheave at the end of the track and then bring it back to anchor at the rear of the cart.

Bill Misiaszek, Engineer with Seaway consulted with APPI to find a more efficient process where the operator only had to use a foot pedal to operate the winch. With a travel distance under 20’, it was determined that a dual line, single layer, positioning winch could pull the cart forward as line spooled on one side of the grooved drum while the return line payed off the opposite side of the drum. To pull the cart back they only need to reverse the direction of the drum and the return spools on the drum while the forwarding line on opposite side of drum spools off.

Due to the presence of flammable substances, a HAZLOC rated motor and controls were required for this application.

Application: Pulling small I-beam rails into place for installation on fixed port cranes.
Customer: Cargotec Crane & Electric
Location: Elizabeth, NJ
Winch Model: Columbia WD1000-1A34-F-01
Line Pull: 1,000 pounds on first layer
Line Speed: 22.5 feet per minute on the first layer
Wire Rope Capacity: 213’ of 3/16” wire rope
Power Source: 115 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz
Special Features: Tension plate, base plate, carry handle

Why APPI: According to Mike Readie – Cargotec Ironworker Foreman – Cargotec required a port crane winch that uses AC power with enough first layer load capacity and speed to meet their application requirements. Unit size and portability were also key in their decision making. Their application consists primarily of pulling rails into place for installation on fixed port cranes.

Mike Readie initially found out about Allied Power Products, Inc. when he and his crew were hired by APM Terminals to install multiple tugboat mounted Columbia HF2100-2A33-L-02 hoist units for the raising and lowering of vessel cable assemblies. Mike stated that at that time they had been using different set ups for their rail installation (including chain falls and come-alongs to hold rails in place while installing) and were in the process of trying to find a better and safer solution. After seeing the quality products Allied Power Products, Inc. supplied to APM Terminals – Mike decided to get with their operations manager – Graeme Cooper and they agreed on our WD1000 AC electric winch unit for their rail installation. They are very satisfied with the capacity, speed and portability of the unit.

Mike and Graeme are now in the process of ordering our Columbia 2000 lb. davit crane along with a Columbia AC electric hoist to complete the first part of their puzzle – raising the rails to proper height for crane installation – in conjunction with our existing WD1000 of course. This will result in a ton of savings since they currently hire a large crane as needed for these rail lifts.

Line Pull: 2,500 pounds on the first layer
Line Speed: 5 feet per minute on the first layer
Power Source: 460 VAC / Three Phase / 60 Hz

Special Features:

Motor (1750 rpm) and controls rated Class I Division 2 Group B/C/D for hazardous location use

Two (2) reversing starters in properly rated enclosure

Installed on panel face:

Circuit breaker disconnect

A/AUTO/B selector switch

FWD/REV momentary contacts

Gear-end manual override

40′ of 5/16′ diameter stainless steel wire rope with latching hook

Two (2) whisker style external limit switches (rated hazardous location)

Why APPI: Moving a rolling load 20 feet with a hand winch may not seem to be an onerous task. However, if your job was cranking one back and forth during a 12 hour shift you too would celebrate when two of our WD2500 AC electric winches arrived and replaced the painfully slow and laborious manual units.

Configured to work in a hazardous environment, the compact planetary reduction winches move a riffler which spreads iron oxide pellets evenly into the smelting furnace below it. In this operation, one winch pulls while the line is pulled off the other winch under tension. This arrangement keeps the lines tight and eliminates the delays and costs associated with wire rope that does not spool properly.

Richard Murry, the mechanical engineer for the plant, confirmed the system is performing as designed. He also indicated the operators never fail to express their gratitude for the new system.
