Why APPI:
Midland Garage Door Manufacturing Company, with over 40 years of experience in manufacturing overhead garage doors for both commercial and residential applications, approached Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) to enhance their manufacturing process. Their production line includes various steel panel doors, each requiring a specific die to be moved in and out of a high-capacity hydraulic press.
Through collaborative discussions, Midland and APPI identified the key requirements for their application:
- Reliable system for moving dies in and out of the press
- Solution to minimize wear and spooling issues
- Easy operation for production staff
- Long-term durability for continuous operation
The determined solution was a dual winch system. For over a decade, they have been using two Columbia WD1300-1A34-F-15 AC electric winches in their manufacturing process. One die winch is used to pull a die for a specific panel into the press and when production of that panel ends the other winch pulls the die out of the press.
Key features of this die pull system include:
- Strap drum conversion, eliminating wire rope spooling and wear concerns
- Freespool control for easy line deployment by operators
- Tie rod guide roller for smooth operation
- Reliable performance proven through over a decade of continuous use
This custom-designed system offers several benefits:
- Efficient die changes during production
- Reduced maintenance requirements
- Enhanced operator safety
- Improved production workflow
