Why APPI:

When Portland General Electric (PGE) needed to enhance their fish ladder flow control system at Willamette Falls, they turned to Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) for a solution. The challenge was to improve the efficiency and safety of managing flow levels for endangered salmon, steelhead, and lamprey eel species migrating to their spawning grounds.

Previously, PGE used a manual system involving multiple chain hoists to lift and place “stop logs” for flow control. This process was not only time-consuming but also potentially dangerous, requiring access through an elaborate tunnel system under the falls.

APPI’s solution centered around the Columbia H21500-4A17-L-00 hoist, specifically engineered for the unique requirements of the fish ladder environment. Key features of this flow control hoist system include:

Robust line pull capacity, suitable for heavy-duty operations in challenging conditions.

Precision control with dual multi-turn potentiometers for accurate position locating.

A custom NEMA 4X control panel with a variable frequency drive, ensuring reliable performance in wet conditions.

User-friendly interface with UP/DOWN buttons and LED indicators for gate positions.

Future-proofing with a LOCAL/REMOTE switch for potential remote control integration.

By implementing APPI’s Columbia flow control hoist, PGE has significantly improved their fish ladder management process. The new system offers several benefits:

Increased efficiency in adjusting gates and stop logs

Enhanced safety for operators

Improved accuracy in flow control

Faster response times for flow adjustments

Better adaptability to changing environmental conditions

This project showcases APPI’s expertise in designing custom solutions for unique environmental challenges. By leveraging their previous experience with fish-related projects, APPI was able to create a hoist system that not only met PGE’s current needs but also anticipated future requirements.

Application: Lifting and Lowering Corn Dryer Access Doors
Customer:Schelkopf Engineering Inc.
Location: Geneva, NE
Hoist Model: Columbia AC Electric HD2000-1A34-F-01
Performance:

Line Pull: 2,000 pounds on the first layer, effectively doubling with a two-part line

Line Speed: 12 feet per minute, reduced to 6 feet per minute with a two-part line

Wire Rope: 40ft. of 5/16″ diameter

Power Source: 115 VAC 1Ø 60 Hertz

Why APPI:

Schelkopf Engineering Inc. designed a unit for a custom seed corn dryer located in Geneva, NE. The reverse flow dryer now uses Columbia Door Hoists. The precision hoists improve reliability. Before, manual counterweights operated the doors. Now, the HD2000-1A34-F-01 model automates them. As a result, safety and efficiency increased in reducing seed corn moisture.

This seed corn drying facility, approximately 100′ x 300′ in size, relies on the Columbia hoist to lift and lower the hinged access doors, which weigh around 800 pounds each. With a line pull of 2,000 pounds on the first layer and 4,000 pounds at the hook with a two-part line, the hoist easily handles the door weight. The 6 feet per minute line speed on the first layer allows the doors to open and close smoothly and efficiently.

The hoist’s NEMA-12 rated full-voltage handheld pendant gives operators precise door control. The spring-applied electrically released brakemotor supports the doors securely in the open position while workers access the dryer interior. This adaptation reflects Allied Power Products’ commitment to delivering tailored, robust solutions for the agricultural sector.

Automating a previously manual process, the Columbia Door Hoist improves safety and streamlines workflows in this critical seed corn drying operation. As demand grows for enhanced quality control in agriculture, innovations like the Columbia AC Electric HD2000 unit will become increasingly valuable for custom facilities.

For more details on our door hoist solutions or to explore our range of products and services, please contact Allied Power Products, Inc. Our team is dedicated to providing tailored solutions to meet your specific industrial needs.

Why APPI:

Proliant, Inc., a food processing plant in Lytton, IA, transitioned from manual winches to Columbia’s automated hoist system for opening and closing vat lids, significantly enhancing operational safety and efficiency. The custom-designed HF3500 hoist, with features suited for high moisture environments, ensures reliable and remote-controlled operations, eliminating the hazards associated with manual winch systems.

The manual winches represented a safety hazard (high steam concentration) for personnel operating close to the vats when opening the lids. The solution was a Columbia AC Electric Hoist HF3500 with custom drums to account for the fleet angle.
Due to the heavily saturated environment, an IP66-rated brakemotor, an epoxy overcoat, and stainless steel hardware were included to keep the hoist working for years.
