Application: Pump hoist maintenance system
Customer: Lafollette Mining Supply Co
Location: Jacksboro, TN
Hoist Model: Columbia HL12000-4A17-L-02 AC Electric Hoists
Trolley Model: Motorized 15-ton Hammerhead Trolley
Performance based on 460 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz:

Line Pull: Maximum of 24,000 lbs. at the hook on each hammerhead. Maximum system lift limited to 30,000 lbs. by user.

Line Speed: 6 feet per minute on the first layer

Wire Rope Capacity: 300 ft. X 1/2″ diameter stainless steel rope

Special Features: Motorized hammerhead trolleys. Synchronized controls for entire system.

WHY APPI:

Local PUD engineers rejected a hoist design for lifting 15,000-pound pumps. As a result, Billy Ball, the Sales Manager for Lafollette Mining Supply, began searching for a reliable solution provider. He told us he chose APPI because of our strong customer reviews and our wide range of successful applications.

Lafollette Mining Supply clearly outlined their needs. First, they wanted a barge-mounted hoist system to lift heavy pumps from depths up to 125 feet. Additionally, the system needed to work in a marine setting. Furthermore, it had to fit within their existing crane frame’s limited headroom. Finally, the design needed to move pumps fore and aft during maintenance.

After detailed discussions, Lafollette Mining Supply and APPI together crafted an effective solution. We agreed on a system using two Columbia HL12000 Hoists paired with two motorized 15-ton hammerhead trolleys. This setup delivers up to 30,000 pounds of line pull to free pumps from depth. Moreover, it keeps pumps at a steady height while the trolley moves across the deck.

This jointly developed pump hoist system offers several key benefits:

The high-efficiency planetary reductions create a compact design

The 5 HP TEFC UL-listed brake motors ensure reliable operation

Synchronized controls allow for precise handling of heavy pumps

Billy happily reported that PUD engineers quickly approved our solution. Subsequently, the team has been impressed with the system’s performance in daily operations.

Application: Loading bagged concrete on trailer
Customer: Thib’s Trailers
Location: Duson, LA
Hammerhead System includes:

• Columbia HF2300 AC Electric Hoist
• Columbia WD850 AC Electric Hoist
• Columbia HH-6 Hammerhead Trolley
• Columbia control panel

Power Source: 115 VAC / Single Phase / 60 Hz

Why APPI: Lifting canvas bags filled with concrete that weigh as much as 2 tons and positioning them on a trailer is challenging at best. When Thib’s Trailers, a family-owned business that provides custom trailers for almost any application, had a customer who needed to perform this task, they turned to us for assistance to provide a system that could do it safely.

The solution is one of our hammerhead trolleys that runs on a 20 foot long I-Beam that extends past the end of the rear deck of the trailer and is supported by A-frames at the front and rear of the trailer. A deck mounted AC electric hoist at the front of the trailer provides the lift and an AC winch with two lines that position the trolley is mounted on top of the I-Beam.

Brad Thibodeaux, Shop Foreman at Thib’s Trailers, preferred the hammerhead system to a conventional hoist on a trolley as it allows for more headroom, does not require a festooned power cord and the trolley is locked in place when the trailer is being moved.

Why APPI: Servicing and changing heavy filter plates on a custom MCRO filter unit from Sparkler Filters is a challenging and time-consuming process, especially on a large-scale unit with multiple individual filter plates. In order to accomplish this task, Phil Lawson, purchasing agent for Sparkler Filters, turned to APPI to engineer filter hoists that could provide the necessary lift and travel to help perform the routine maintenance on this unit.

In operation, the Columbia Hammerhead Trolley is mounted on an I-Beam, called the “Bridge”, which is mounted perpendicularly to the filter frame. The bridge traverses the filter frame while the hammerhead trolley moves along the bridge in order to be positioned directly above each filter plate throughout the vessel. When the hoist is in position and connected, the filter plate is lifted out of the vessel for cleaning or replacement.

Once installed, Lawson said the Columbia pneumatic hoist and hammerhead trolley were clearly the right choice for this application as they have performed flawlessly since installation.

Line Pull: 6,000 pounds at the hook
Line Speed: 6 feet per minute at the hook
Wire Rope Capacity: 60 feet x 5/16″ diameter wire rope
Power Source: 12 VDC

Why APPI: Finding a way to get burial vaults weighing up to 4,000 lbs. on and off Bicke’s flatbed delivery truck was complicated because there was no auxiliary power on the truck. However, it was equipped with an I-beam crane rail supported by stanchions at the front and rear of the bed. The limited headroom and lack of power precluded using a typical hoist and overhead trolley.

Our solution was a one-ton capacity 12 VDC hoist used in conjunction with one of our Columbia “Hammerhead” style overhead trolleys. The hoist was deck mounted next to the back of the cab and directly under the crane I-Beam. The wire rope is reeved from the hoist up through a vertical lead sheave under the beam and then through the overhead trolley sheaves and hooked to the anchor point at the outboard end of the I-Beam. This arrangement allows the vaults to be lifted until they clear the top of the truck bed and then move down the I-Beam to their transport position while remaining at a constant height off the deck.

The use of the hammerhead trolleys doubles the line pull at the hook. As a result, Bickes used a 12 VDC hoist that did not overload the electrical system on their truck.

Our Columbia Hammerhead trolleys are available in standard capacities of 1, 3, 7.5, and 10 tons. Manual positioning is standard, but chain-driven and powered options are available for indoor or outdoor use.

Why APPI: Unknown to many people are the extensive wetlands maintained behind the flood levees on the Mississippi River, the 4th longest in the world. The protected wetlands act as buffers that smooth out river water levels while providing recreational opportunities and providing a habitat for fish and waterfowl.

Jeff Vassalli, a project manager for Magruder Construction Co of Eolia, Missouri, was given the job of installing a site-specific, bi-directional water pumping system for the Corp of Engineers in one of these habitats areas. The system needed to be capable of moving 60,000 gallons of water per minute to ensure as stable a water level as possible. A barge-mounted pump with a flexible connector was specified to tie up next to either of the two pumping stations at this location and connect with another flexible coupling on the pump station side.

The connection on these 24″ diameter couplings is at water level. Therefore, Magruder required a jib crane to lift and position the couplings laterally. After examining several possibilities, Magruder suggested – and the COE approved – a pair of jib crane systems designed specifically for this job from Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) of Beaverton, Oregon. Equipped with APPI’s proprietary hammerhead trolley system, these jib crane systems feature a hydraulic hoist powered by a portable hydraulic power unit as there was no source of power at the site.

The hydraulic power unit from APPI is compact, reliable, and easy to move from storage to the job site and then from crane to crane. The cranes’ other notable features included a jib crane rotation locking mechanism and a lockable weather-proof housing to protect the hoist. Resistant to damage by design, the only exposed portion of the system when it’s not being used is the hammerhead trolley, a distant target high above the pumping stations.

Although these cranes were designed and built for this application, the startup testing and acceptance by the COE was, as Vassalli said, “Absolutely flawless.” As a result, both Magruder and APPI are looking forward to future opportunities where their respective skills and expertise can be put to work.
