Why APPI:

The Hershey Company needed a reliable food grade hoist solution for transporting materials along their chocolate manufacturing line. After conducting a thorough web search, Tom Smullen, Technical Assurance Manager at Hershey, approached Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) to help identify the optimal equipment for their specific requirements.

Through collaborative discussions, The Hershey Company and APPI analyzed the application needs. The food grade hoist system would need to lift loads of approximately 1,000 pounds to a height of 10 feet before moving materials 20 feet down the production line to the next position where they would be lowered. Food-grade compatibility was essential for maintaining the highest standards in chocolate manufacturing.

Based on these requirements, both parties determined that a Columbia HD1300 AC electric strap hoist paired with a 1-ton capacity Columbia manual trolley would be the ideal solution. The food grade hoist features include:

Strap conversion for stable vertical lifting and lowering

Clean operation suitable for chocolate manufacturing environments

Easy-to-handle system compared to wire rope or chain alternatives

Precise control for material movement along the production line

Food-safe design meeting industry standards

Tom specifically chose the strap version of the food grade hoist as it provides cleaner handling than traditional options—a crucial consideration in food manufacturing environments where hygiene and product safety are paramount.

While the loads may vary depending on the specific product being manufactured, they are always sure to be part of something “sweet” in the end!

For more information about this food grade hoist and trolley system or any of APPI’s other specialized products and services, please contact Allied Power Products, Inc. With over 40 years of experience in providing winches, hoists, capstans, and cranes tailored to specific application requirements, APPI continues to be a trusted partner in the food manufacturing industry.

Why APPI:

Midland Garage Door Manufacturing Company, with over 40 years of experience in manufacturing overhead garage doors for both commercial and residential applications, approached Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) to enhance their manufacturing process. Their production line includes various steel panel doors, each requiring a specific die to be moved in and out of a high-capacity hydraulic press.

Through collaborative discussions, Midland and APPI identified the key requirements for their application:

Reliable system for moving dies in and out of the press

Solution to minimize wear and spooling issues

Easy operation for production staff

Long-term durability for continuous operation

The determined solution was a dual winch system. For over a decade, they have been using two Columbia WD1300-1A34-F-15 AC electric winches in their manufacturing process. One die winch is used to pull a die for a specific panel into the press and when production of that panel ends the other winch pulls the die out of the press.

Key features of this die pull system include:

Strap drum conversion, eliminating wire rope spooling and wear concerns

Freespool control for easy line deployment by operators

Tie rod guide roller for smooth operation

Reliable performance proven through over a decade of continuous use

This custom-designed system offers several benefits:

Efficient die changes during production

Reduced maintenance requirements

Enhanced operator safety

Improved production workflow

Why APPI:

JC Steele & Sons, Inc., a leading manufacturer of heavy clay and materials processing equipment, approached Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) with a unique challenge. They needed a winch system to pull sections of their extrusion machines out on a rail and bearing system for periodic maintenance and repair.

Jody Robinson, an engineer at JC Steele & Sons, identified two primary requirements for their ideal solution:

Compact size to fit within their existing machinery setup

Minimal maintenance needs to reduce downtime and operational costs

After discussing these requirements, APPI and JC Steele & Sons collaborated to find the perfect solution: the Columbia WG11000-4A17-L-23 AC Electric Strap Winch.

Key features of this extrusion machine winch include:

A strap drum conversion, eliminating the issues associated with wire rope in short-distance, frequent load/unload scenarios

Quick mount brackets for easy installation and removal during maintenance

High line pull capacity of 11,000 pounds, suitable for moving heavy machinery components

These manufacturers often use dies and presses to shape sheet metal components for their products.

When it’s time to change the parts being pressed, manufacturers rely on APPI’s winches distributed by Motion Industries to supply specialized Columbia Strap Winches for extracting the dies from large hydraulic presses. Two WG5000-4A34-L-23 winches, one on each side, handle this critical task.

The winch features a 3400 RPM, 3.0 HP motor that delivers an optimal balance of line speed and pull force. A 30-foot long, 4-inch wide nylon strap securely attaches to the -23 strap drum using button head screws. Manufacturers often prefer strap over wire rope because winch mounting locations can hinder proper wire rope spooling.

For quick connection to the die’s mounting point, the strap includes a looped end. The NEMA 4X hand-held pendant provides durability and protection, withstanding harsh environments where it may accidentally fall, get kicked around, or become covered in die lubricant.

Allied Power Products takes pride in delivering winch solutions tailored to the unique needs of industrial manufacturers. Contact us to learn more about our custom engineering capabilities and how we can optimize your production processes.

WHY APPI:

Vactor, Inc. has built vacuum trucks for sewer cleaning and maintenance for over 50 years. These trucks feature an extendible boom that helps position the vacuum tip easily in different work areas.

In 2009, Vactor chose a Columbia WF7000 AC electric winch with a strap to pull boom parts together during assembly. The winch worked perfectly for 10 years. As a result, Ryan Leman, who supervises the jig and fixture department, reached out to Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) to order another identical unit.

Together, Vactor and APPI confirmed that the Columbia WF7000-4A17-L-23 remained the best choice for their boom assembly work. Moreover, the winch offers several benefits that match Vactor’s needs:

Proven reliability from 10 years of trouble-free operation

Strap drum design that avoids common problems with wire rope

Ideal pulling power and speed control for precise assembly work

Vactor will now use this second Columbia winch in their new production line. Furthermore, Ryan stated they bought another APPI unit “with zero apprehension or doubt about how it would work” – clearly showing their satisfaction with the original Columbia winch.

Special Features:

• 2.0” wide strap; drum modification with tie rod strap guide
• Custom three phase brake motor (3/4 HP totally enclosed, Fan Cooled and UL listed)

Why APPI: Every fall, the Bonneville Fish Hatchery fills with adult Chinook and Coho salmon returning to their spawning grounds, which in this case is the hatchery, to complete their life cycle. When the adults first arrive they swim into a crowder which is then lifted to a sorting station where they are separated according to species, sex, and condition.

Our Columbia AC electric strap hoists are used on the crowder gates and on the crowder elevators. With approximately 30,000 Chinook and 50,000 Coho salmon being processed at the hatchery, these strap hoists are a key part of keeping the operation running smoothly.

Why APPI: The challenge of handling large component assemblies in any manufacturing process is never ending. It is magnified when minimal head room is available and the product being assembled is a wind turbine.

That was the case when a major wind turbine manufacturer needed a material handling hoist in their assembly area and the beam mounted hoists they looked at all hung too low to be usable in their application. When they consulted with us, we suggested one of our Columbia HC1500 AC electric hoists with a strap for lifting that would be mounted to the side of the pick point. To maximize the headroom we provided a change of direction roller that was installed on their lifting beam.

This arrangement was ideal for them as it provided approximately 24” of additional head room compared to a typical beam mounted hoist. To allow precise load positioning, the handheld pendant controller was provided with a potentiometer to control the speed of the hoist.

Please contact us if you would like more information about this particular type of material handling hoist or any of our other products and services.

Why APPI: When EHS Solutions LLC was contracted to build a cart capable of lifting 800 lb. barrels of powder, they asked us to provide a clean room hoist to do the heavy lifting.

After an initial review of their requirements, one of our Columbia HD1000-P-15 pneumatic hoists with a strap, rather than wire rope, was specified for use in this clean room application. Working closely with EHS engineers, a 261:1 gear set was chosen to match the performance of the hoist to their customer’s requirements for line pull and line speed.

Its compact size, high efficiency planetary gear reduction and in-the-drum brake combined with virtually no maintenance requirements made this a perfect fit for the drum lifter.

With over 30 years of experience providing clean room hoists to the aerospace, food & beverage manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals industries, it is easy to see why EHS comes back to APPI when they have an application requiring a hoist. With the ability to modify a standard unit, or create a completely custom unit, Columbia clean room hoists can be adapted for use on an overhead crane or trolley, base-mounted, or used with a davit crane.

Please contact us if you would like more information about this particular pneumatic clean room hoist or any of our other products and services.

Application: House Moving with a Columbia AC Electric Strap Winch
Customer: Kasita
Location: Austin, TX
Winch Model: Columbia WG11000-4A17-L-23
Line Pull: 11,000 pounds on the first layer
Line Speed: 7.7 feet per minute on the first layer
Strap Capacity: 32 foot x 4” wide strap
Power Source: 460 VAC / Three phase / 60 Hz
Special Features: Strap drum with one 22′ section strap with shackle and two additional sections of 19′ strap with eyes and shackles.

Why APPI: When Kasita completes one of their micro-houses, they need to move it from their indoor construction area to an outside loading dock where it can be loaded by crane onto a flatbed trailer.

Although they are tiny houses, their weight and construction precludes pushing or pulling them into position with a lift truck. Using a winch was an ideal solution but Benji Miller, Director of Operations for Kasita, had a short lead time to install a unit, a restricted area for installation and the need to make the operation as simple and fool-proof as possible. The answer to his needs was one of our Columbia WG11000 AC electric winches with three sections of strap for pulling the house.

When the house is moved, the operation begins with three strap sections linked together. After the first section has been spooled, the second section of strap is removed and the drum is freespooled. This allows the spooled section of strap to be pulled out and attached to the section of strap attached to the house. The first section of strap is spooled again and when the drum is freespooled the strap is pulled out and attached to the house. With this third pull the house ends up positioned next to the winch. By using the strap, the house is pulled in a straight line without any of the issues that would be faced using wire rope.

The winch and controls are installed outdoors with a key lock on the controls to prevent unauthorized use.

Miller said the quick delivery of the strap winch kept their production on schedule and its operation has “brought the house down” with praise as to how well it works for them.

Please contact us if you would like more information about this particular strap winch or any of our other products and services.
