Customer: Manta Ray Bay Resorts & Yap Divers

Line Pull: 2,300 lbs on first layer

Line Speed: 12.2 fpm on first layer

Power Source: 115 VAC 1Ø 60 Hertz

Why APPI:

Manta Ray Bay Resort & Yap Divers, located in Colonia, Yap, operates a unique floating restaurant housed in a 121-year-old Indonesian Phinisi sailing ship. The restaurant relies on a dumbwaiter system to efficiently transport items between the kitchen in the belly of the ship and the three service floors above.

Numie Acker, the General Manager at Manta Ray Bay Resort & Yap Divers, shared their experience working with Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI):

“Allied Power Company was very accommodating and were willing to assist us in getting their product to us in Yap, FSM. The customer service was outstanding, and they took care of ensuring that we had received our product safely.

We have been pleased with their product as we bought our first hoist from them over 15 years ago and did not have to replace it until last year. The hoist is used for our dumbwaiter system on our floating restaurant which is on an over a century old Indonesian Phinisi ship.”

APPI recommended the Columbia HF2300-1A17-L-02 AC electric hoist for the dumbwaiter application. This hoist offers a load rating of up to 2,300 lbs on the first layer and a line speed of 12.2 fpm, making it well-suited for the demanding environment of the floating restaurant.

The Columbia hoist, powered by a 115 VAC single-phase motor, seamlessly integrated with the restaurant’s existing dumbwaiter system, ensuring smooth and efficient operation. The durability and reliability of the Columbia hoist are evident from the fact that Manta Ray Bay Resort & Yap Divers used their first APPI hoist for over 15 years before needing a replacement.

APPI’s commitment to providing high-quality products and exceptional customer service has earned the trust of customers like Manta Ray Bay Resort & Yap Divers. The Columbia HF2300-1A17-L-02 AC electric hoist exemplifies APPI’s ability to deliver solutions that withstand the test of time and meet the unique requirements of diverse applications, even in challenging environments like floating restaurants.

Allied Power Products takes pride in delivering hoisting solutions tailored to the unique needs of all industries. Contact us to learn more about our custom engineering capabilities and how we can optimize your production processes.

Why APPI:

When the City of Vancouver and Walla Walla Foundry embarked on installing Rodney Graham’s ambitious Spinning Chandelier beneath the Granville Street Bridge, they faced an extraordinary engineering challenge: creating a reliable chandelier hoist system capable of precisely maneuvering a 3.5-tonne art installation twice daily in Vancouver’s demanding outdoor environment.

The project, approved by the City in 2015 and taking more than three years to design and manufacture, required hoists that could safely handle the chandelier’s massive dimensions—eight by four metres—while providing the exact control necessary for both vertical positioning and spinning movements. The kinetic sculpture, constructed from stainless steel, LED lights, and more than 600 polyurethane crystals, needed to descend from its holding position, perform its spinning sequence, and return safely to the dark underbelly of the north viaduct twice each day. After extensive collaboration between the project team and Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI), the solution centered around six Columbia H10000 hoists specifically configured for this unique artistic application.

Working closely with Walla Walla Foundry and city engineers, APPI and the project team jointly determined that the Columbia H10000-4A17-X-01G configuration would best meet the installation’s demanding requirements.

Key features of this collaborative chandelier hoist system solution include:

Six synchronized Columbia H10000 hoists providing redundant lifting capacity and precise control for the fragile artwork

Inverter-rated brake motors with absolute encoders, ensuring accurate positioning during the chandelier’s daily performance cycles

Comprehensive monitoring systems including temperature control, brake wear detection, and motor heating to maintain reliable operation in Vancouver’s variable weather conditions

Custom grooved drum assemblies engineered specifically for this application’s cable management requirements

This innovative hoist system enables the Spinning Chandelier to perform its scheduled rotations and vertical movements twice daily with the precision required for both artistic impact and public safety. The chandelier, suspended above the busy intersection of Beach Avenue and Granville Street and affiliated with the striking Vancouver House development, operates reliably thanks to the robust design features collaboratively developed for this unique application.

By implementing this custom Columbia chandelier hoist system, the City of Vancouver has successfully created a landmark art installation that combines artistic vision with engineering excellence. The system’s advanced monitoring and control features ensure safe, reliable operation of this spectacular public artwork.

For more information about this chandelier hoist system or any of APPI’s other specialized products and services, please contact Allied Power Products, Inc.

These manufacturers often use dies and presses to shape sheet metal components for their products.

When it’s time to change the parts being pressed, manufacturers rely on APPI’s winches distributed by Motion Industries to supply specialized Columbia Strap Winches for extracting the dies from large hydraulic presses. Two WG5000-4A34-L-23 winches, one on each side, handle this critical task.

The winch features a 3400 RPM, 3.0 HP motor that delivers an optimal balance of line speed and pull force. A 30-foot long, 4-inch wide nylon strap securely attaches to the -23 strap drum using button head screws. Manufacturers often prefer strap over wire rope because winch mounting locations can hinder proper wire rope spooling.

For quick connection to the die’s mounting point, the strap includes a looped end. The NEMA 4X hand-held pendant provides durability and protection, withstanding harsh environments where it may accidentally fall, get kicked around, or become covered in die lubricant.

Allied Power Products takes pride in delivering winch solutions tailored to the unique needs of industrial manufacturers. Contact us to learn more about our custom engineering capabilities and how we can optimize your production processes.
