APPI’s Columbia HF550-P-02 pneumatic hoist offers a line pull of 550 pounds on the first layer and an impressive line speed of 127 feet per minute, exceeding HMT’s requirements for quick vertical transportation of tools and equipment. The hoist’s 100-foot capacity of 3/16″ diameter stainless steel wire rope, complete with an overhaul plate and latching hook, ensures secure and efficient lifting operations.

Key to the selection of the Columbia HF550-P-02 was its suitability for hazardous locations. The pneumatic power source, requiring 65 PSI @ 110 CFM, eliminates the need for electrical components, making it inherently safer for use in potentially explosive environments. Additionally, the hoist is equipped with a pressure-released, spring-set brake, enabling safe and controlled lifting and lowering of rated loads.

Why APPI:  Cleaning pipelines with a PIG is a routine maintenance procedure in the oil industry, but an often-overlooked piece of this work is cleaning the PIGs when they become dirty.  For Seaway Crude Pipeline, LLC, this task was accomplished by utilizing a maintenance cart rolling on a track at the outlet of the pipeline trap.  Their previous procedure to reverse the direction of the cart required the winch operator to disconnect the latching hook from the front of the cart and run it through a sheave at the end of the track and then bring it back to anchor at the rear of the cart.

Bill Misiaszek, Engineer with Seaway consulted with APPI to find a more efficient process where the operator only had to use a foot pedal to operate the winch.  With a travel distance under 20’, it was determined that a dual line, single layer, positioning winch could pull the cart forward as line spooled on one side of the grooved drum while the return line payed off the opposite side of the drum. To pull the cart back they only need to reverse the direction of the drum and the return spools on the drum while the forwarding line on opposite side of drum spools off.

Due to the presence of flammable substances, a HAZLOC rated motor and controls were required for this application.

Why APPI:  Over the course of many years, Vo-Tech has grown and evolved from providing field machining services for power generation plants around the country to a providing full-service manufacturing services at their facility in Crystal Lake, IL.

To meet the need for a method to lift a very large seal off a motor in a nuclear power plant they provided their customer with a dual beam trolley equipped with two of our Columbia HD1300 AC electric hoists.

The trolley runs on two beams and is equipped with proprietary VFD control system to control the hoists.  The motors are rated to run at full load at slow speeds without overheating.  The motors and spring applied, electrically released brake run from separate power sources to provide an additional level of controllability.

Why APPI: Over time, the accumulation of sludge on the inside walls of pipes carrying crude oil reduces flow and in severe cases can block the flow.  To remove the crud, a “pig,” which is designed to scrape the walls of the pipe, is pulled through it as part of a regular maintenance routine. Then, a cart, which carries the pig, is pulled on a track between entry points and its stowed location by one of our Columbia WG5600 HAZLOC-rated explosion-proof winches.

As this operation is conducted in a potentially explosive atmosphere, the winch was equipped with an explosion-proof motor.  To further reduce the chance of sparking, stainless steel wire rope with a stainless steel latching hook is used on the winch.  Power for this HAZLOC rated explosion-proof winch was routed through appropriately rated conduit to an explosion proof, foot pedal control.

Why APPI:  Moving containers filled with hazardous materials is a complicated challenge that is only compounded when it occurs in an explosive atmosphere.   EHS Solutions LLC specializes in the manufacture of custom material handling equipment, and when they required a HAZLOC DC hoist on one of their specially designed hazardous material transfer carts, they turned to us for assistance.

For this project, EHS Solutions needed to minimize the mast height on the cart as well as power the HAZLOC DC hoist with a motor that met the stringent requirements of the National Electric Code (NEC) for a Class 1 Division 2 Group D explosive environment.  To help reduce both height and potential sparking, we provided a strap-equipped hoist and met the motor requirements by providing a compliant DC motor that is powered by an on-board rechargeable 24 VDC battery – making the unit self-contained, fully mobile, and non-sparking.
