Why APPI
Over time, the accumulation of sludge on the inside walls of pipes carrying crude oil reduces flow and in severe cases can block the flow. To remove the crud, a “pig,” which is designed to scrape the walls of the pipe, is pulled through it as part of a regular maintenance routine. Then, a cart, which carries the pig, is pulled on a track between entry points and its stowed location by one of our Columbia WG5600 HAZLOC-rated explosion-proof winches.
As this operation is conducted in a potentially explosive atmosphere, the winch was equipped with an explosion-proof motor. To further reduce the chance of sparking, stainless steel wire rope with a stainless steel latching hook is used on the winch. Power for this HAZLOC rated explosion-proof winch was routed through appropriately rated conduit to an explosion proof, foot pedal control.
