WHY APPI:
RNG Corporation approached Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) with a challenge: they needed a reliable solution for their shore docking system at Prior Lake, MN. Unlike vertical boat hoists that lift the entire weight of a watercraft, shore docking systems pull boats at an angle up a small railway, typically requiring less complicated and less expensive equipment.
While hand winches are common on these units, RNG Corporation recognized that as boats get larger, manual cranking becomes more difficult and potentially hazardous since operators must remain in direct contact with the winch. For their Roll-n-Go unit designed to dock a 4,500-pound vessel on a 30% slope, they needed a powered solution that would prioritize both efficiency and operator safety.
RNG Corporation used APPI’s simple guidelines to figure out how much pulling power they needed. They used a basic math formula that adds up how steep the slope is and how slippery the surface is. For their 4,500-pound boat on a 30% slope with rollers, they found that the HD1300 hoist with its 1,300-pound pulling power would work great for their needs.
After looking at all the options, RNG Corporation chose the Columbia HD1300 hoist as the best fit for their needs.
Key features of this shore docking hoist include:
- An automatic, load-suspending braking system that keeps the boat safe from hook-up until it’s back in the water.
- Permanently lubricated, high-efficiency planetary reduction so it doesn’t need much upkeep.
- A NEMA 12 rated handheld pendant that lets the boat owner stand far away from the winch for safety.
- Wire rope capacity of 99 feet × 3/16″ to pull the boat all the way up the ramp.
By using the Columbia shore docking hoist with its automatic braking system and specialized features, RNG Corporation made their boat docking safer, faster, and easier than using hand cranks.
