Why APPI: Drilex International specializes in manufacturing rotors, stators, and other essential components for oil and gas well drilling. Their focus includes both drilling and thru-tubing operations.
Joe Garnica, a Drilex engineer, reached out for a better mold-pulling solution. They were replacing their existing hydraulic cylinder, which was used to pull molds out of the elastomer in the core of a stator after it was cast. In addition to the cylinder not lining up correctly with the mold at certain angles, their hydraulic system had ongoing leakage issues.
With the maximum line pull required to break the mold free anticipated at 40,000 lbs. APPI and Drilex decided to use one of our Columbia WK17000 AC electric winches rigged with four parts of line. When less line pull is required, the rigging can be changed to use fewer parts of line. The maximum of 20 feet of pulling distance dictated the need for 80 feet of line on the drum to accommodate the 4-part rigging.
We worked with Joe to ensure his line pull and line capacity requirements were covered in all of his working situations. Although the line speed with four parts of line will be very slow, Joe said it would benefit them as pulling the mold free is a critical step in their manufacturing process.
