Why APPI:  At Woods Hole Oceanpgraphic Institution, testing an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) is a critical part of their standard operating procedures as a failure during use can mean not just the loss of the use of the vessel, but the loss of the vessel itself.

In order to accomplish their testing on a new ROV, WHOI required a hoist with a minimal footprint while still providing enough lifting capacity to pull the vehicle out of the water.  They also requested a reduced speed to protect valuable equipment on the ROV during the testing process.  Working closely with APPI, a Columbia HD1000 was specified for this task application.

According to Rick Galat, Senior Facilities Engineer at WHOI, they needed a company that could provide an AC electric hoist as well as the expertise to configure the unit to the very specific load and performance requirements needed for their testing.
