Why APPI: Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI) was recently contacted by Seattle area fine art management company Artech Inc to assist in the construction of a stress-reducing and vibrant ocean-themed environment at the Seattle Children’s Hospital. The piece in question was a 9,800-pound glass sculpture of an orca whale mother and child, positioned high above the lobby floor. APPI was called upon to engineer a dual-hoist system to help position and maintain this beautiful piece.
APPI provided two Columbia HG5600 AC Electric Hoists mounted overhead and out of sight to effectively raise and lower this unique work of art. Additionally, due to space limitations and to ensure proper spooling of the wire rope, custom 4″ drums were provided in tandem with floating sheaves that would allow for improved fleet angle.
With the operator in mind, APPI utilized a wall-mounted control panel designed to synchronize the two aerial sculpture hoists or operate individually to achieve the appropriate pitch. The intuitive controls made it possible to precisely position the 25-foot long work of art just as the artist intended above the entryway between the first and second floors.
The final mounting of the Orca and child marked the successful addition of another priceless addition to the Seattle Children’s Hospital.
