Why APPI:
Raising and lowering a hinged thickener tank decanter pipe — roughly 1,000 pounds of pipe swinging on a hinge in an outdoor industrial setting — is exactly the kind of job that calls for a purpose-matched decanter pipe hoist. Haren Construction Company, Inc. needed a safe, reliable, and efficient way to position the pipe through about 16 feet of travel, using standard 120 VAC single-phase power, in conditions that would expose the equipment to the elements.
Haren Construction brought the challenge to Allied Power Products, Inc. (APPI). Working closely together, the two teams reviewed the full set of application factors — lift weight, travel distance, available power, duty cycle, controls, wire rope, and the outdoor environment. Through that collaborative assessment, they determined that the Columbia HD1300-1A34-F-11 AC Electric Hoist was the best fit for the job.
Because the supporting structure had site-specific requirements, APPI and Haren Construction also agreed on a practical approach to the pedestal: APPI recommended either an off-the-shelf pedestal or one developed by a local engineer/fabricator. This kept the hoist system tightly matched to the lifting task while giving Haren the flexibility to engineer the support structure around the site’s specific installation needs.
Key features of this jointly developed decanter pipe hoist include:
- Right-sized lifting capacity. The HD1300 is rated to pull up to 1,300 pounds for 10 feet with 3/16″ wire rope at approximately 15 feet per minute on the first layer, providing comfortable margin over the roughly 1,000-pound decanter pipe.
- Confirmed reach and pull. APPI verified the unit can deliver at least 1,100 pounds of pulling capacity with 40 feet of 3/16″ stainless steel wire rope, at speeds up to approximately 18 feet per minute — covering the project’s full travel requirement.
- Corrosion-minded wire rope. The selected 3/16″ stainless steel wire rope, with a reported breaking strength of approximately 3,700 pounds, helps stand up to the outdoor environment while carrying the load safely.
- Wet-location controls. A NEMA 4 rated handheld pendant gives the operator dependable, close-in control suited to the outdoor setting.
- Intermittent-duty design. Rated for intermittent operation — up to about 15 minutes per hour — the HD1300 matches the on-and-off nature of positioning the hinged pipe.
Benefits
- Simpler, safer positioning: a dedicated hoist replaces manual handling, helping reduce the physical effort of raising and lowering the hinged decanter pipe.
- Dependable outdoor performance: the lifting capacity, stainless wire rope, intermittent-duty rating, and standard 120 VAC power align closely with the project’s real-world operating conditions.
- Better maintenance access: controlled lifting and positioning helps make routine service around the thickener tank more straightforward.
- Flexibility where it counts: pairing a purpose-matched hoist with a site-engineered pedestal lets the overall installation fit Haren Construction’s specific structural and layout requirements.
