Determining Duty Cycle

Winch and Hoist Application Guidelines

The duty cycle of a winch or a hoist is determined by the following factors:

  1. The amount of weight being moved as a percentage of the unit's rated capacity.
  2. The frequency of use expressed as the number of starts and stops in a given period of time.
  3. Duration of use which is the amount of time the unit is run with a load on it.

Appropriate consideration of duty cycle will help ensure an appropriately sized and rated product is selected for any given application.
